Permanent, full-time role.

We're offering an exciting, newly created opportunity for an experienced and people-centred professional to join our supportive, friendly, and high-performing HR Business Partnering Team. As Employee Relations Manager, you'll play a key strategic role in partnering with academic and professional services leaders across the University, delivering expert guidance and oversight on all aspects of employee relations case management.

Reporting to the Head of HR Business Partnering, you'll drive consistency, clarity, and continuous improvement in our ER practices. You'll develop and implement clear guidance, templates, and process maps that support timely, fair, and effective case resolution.

This role also carries line management responsibility for a team of HR Business Partners and HR Advisors--providing leadership, coaching, and support to enable high-quality service delivery across the University.

We're looking for someone who:

Brings substantial senior-level experience in managing complex employee relations casework. Has exceptional people leadership and relationship-building skills, with the ability to influence, support, and constructively challenge senior stakeholders. Leads by empowering and enabling others--fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and collaboration. Takes a proactive, solution-focused approach to a wide range of ER issues, helping managers and staff navigate challenges while achieving their goals. Is adept at identifying and mitigating risks in complex, sensitive situations while offering creative, practical solutions. Thinks strategically and creatively, always seeing potential for improvement and innovation. Communicates with openness, clarity, and courage--offering both high support and high challenge in equal measure.

We offer a generous pension and annual leave provision (40 days including statutory holidays), family-friendly policies and state-of-the-art campus facilities. We also operate a hybrid working model that allows staff to combine on-site and remote working where appropriate, dependent on work duties.

Informal queries in relation to this opportunity are very welcome, and should be directed to Annwyn Williams, Head of HR Business Partnering at annwyn.williams@bcu.ac.uk.

Interviews for this role will take place on the 11th of June 2025.

The selection process will include an interview and a work-related exercise element, and full details will be provided to shortlisted candidates in advance.

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
