Main purpose of job:



The Engineering Design Office Manager is responsible for leading and managing the engineering design function, ensuring high-quality, compliant and cost-effective designs are delivered in line with customer and business requirements. The role supports operational delivery by coordinating design resources, maintaining engineering standards and driving continuous improvement within the design office.

Key Responsibilities



Lead, manage and support the Engineering Design team, providing technical guidance, direction and workload prioritisation Plan and coordinate design activities to ensure projects are delivered on time and to specification Oversee the production, review and approval of engineering drawings, models and technical documentation Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards, regulations and company procedures Act as a key interface between the Design Office, Production, Projects, Service and Sales teams Support manufacturing and installation teams by resolving design queries and technical issues Manage design changes, ensuring revisions are controlled, documented and communicated effectively Drive continuous improvement within the Design Office, improving processes, systems and ways of working Maintain engineering standards, templates and best practice across the design function Support new product development and innovation activities where required Monitor workload, capacity and performance within the Design Office Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and quality requirements within the department Contribute to project reviews, technical meetings and business planning activities Undertake any other duties reasonably required by Senior Management that are aligned with the company's objectives

Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours



Strong leadership and people management skills Excellent technical understanding of mechanical and/or electrical engineering design Ability to read, interpret and approve engineering drawings and specifications Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities Confident communicator, able to work effectively with engineers, production teams and senior stakeholders Practical, solutions-focused approach to problem-solving High attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement Calm and professional under pressure

Hours of Work



Monday to Thursday: 08:00 - 17:00 Friday: 08:00 - 16:30

Qualifications & Experience



Essential

Proven experience in an engineering design role within a manufacturing or engineering environment Experience leading or coordinating an engineering or design team Strong working knowledge of engineering design standards and practices Proficiency in relevant CAD systems (e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar) Ability to manage design workloads, priorities and deadlines
Desirable

Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent) Experience designing machinery or engineered products Experience working in a project-based or bespoke manufacturing environment Knowledge of change control and engineering document management systems
