We are seeking an Environmental & Sustainability Coordinator / Manager to support our National Grid projects, ensuring compliance with environmental standards, carbon lifecycle assessments, and sustainability action planning. This role will also be responsible for recording, calculating, and reporting Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions and developing strategies to reduce Alpha Construction's carbon footprint. Additionally, this role will review and investigate resources, such as the Supply Chain Sustainability School portal to identify CPD opportunities and social value aspects for employee development and contribute to content suggestions for LinkedIn to promote Alpha Construction's sustainability initiatives.
Role Overview
This is an exciting opportunity in environmental risk management, carbon footprint reduction, biodiversity conservation, sustainability reporting, and corporate emissions reduction within the construction sector. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams to implement sustainability initiatives, manage environmental compliance, and support Alpha Construction's carbon reduction commitments. Additional training will be provided to ensure proficiency in construction-specific environmental management, carbon reporting, and lifecycle assessment tools.
Key Responsibilities
Carbon Management & Emissions Reporting (Aligned with SDG 13: Climate Action & PAS 2080)
Record, calculate, and report Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions for Alpha Construction's operations, supply chain, and projects. Develop and maintain a Carbon Emissions Register, ensuring accurate data collection and alignment with industry standards.
Establish carbon baselines for projects and track performance against National Grid sustainability targets.
Identify and implement strategies to reduce carbon emissions, including energy efficiency improvements, material selection, and sustainable transport solutions.
Work with suppliers and subcontractors to gather Scope 3 emissions data and drive low-carbon procurement.
Support the completion of carbon lifecycle assessments (LCAs), ensuring alignment to PAS 2080 and ISO 14064.
Assist in reporting carbon performance to National Grid, internal stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
Supply Chain Sustainability School (CPD & Social Value
)
Regularly review the Supply Chain Sustainability School portal and other sources to identify relevant training courses, resources, and CPD opportunities for Alpha Construction employees.
Recommend training and development opportunities that align with Alpha Construction's sustainability goals.
Identify and promote social value aspects from the Supply Chain Sustainability School that can be integrated into Alpha Construction's sustainability initiatives.
Environmental & Sustainability Management (Aligned with UN SDGs)
Assist in identifying and assessing environmental risks and opportunities for projects (SDG 13: Climate Action).
Develop and maintain environmental registers, databases, and spreadsheets for tracking sustainability performance (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure).
Contribute to biodiversity action planning, ensuring project compliance with a minimum of 10% Net Gain, protecting natural habitats, and supporting species conservation (SDG 15: Life on Land).
Develop strategies to minimise resource consumption, including water (SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation), energy (SDG 7: Affordable & Clean Energy), and materials to promote sustainable construction practices.
Work on initiatives to reduce environmental pollution and improve air and water quality in project areas (SDG 3: Good Health & Well-being).
Support compliance with ISO 14040, ISO 14044, PAS 2050, EN 15804, PAS 2080, and other relevant environmental standards.
Assist in preparing environmental impact assessments and sustainability action plans (SAPs) for construction projects.
Monitor and report sustainability performance metrics against National Grid's sustainability requirements.
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for Alpha Construction's Environmental Management System (EMS).
Social & Community Engagement (Aligned with SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities & SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth)
Support projects that promote inclusive and sustainable infrastructure development, ensuring benefits for local communities.
Work with supply chain partners to encourage ethical and sustainable procurement practices.
Engage with local stakeholders to identify and implement initiatives that enhance community well-being and support economic growth.
Content Development for LinkedIn & Public Engagement
Assist in suggesting LinkedIn content to promote Alpha Construction's sustainability initiatives, carbon reduction strategies, and social value contributions.
Identify opportunities to showcase best practices, project successes, and sustainability commitments via LinkedIn and other platforms.
Collaborate with marketing and sustainability teams to ensure consistent and impactful messaging.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and Sustainability, or a related discipline. Along with relevant optional modules (e.g. Sustainable Energy)
Strong understanding of sustainability, carbon management, biodiversity conservation, and environmental compliance.
Knowledge of carbon footprint methodologies, Scope 1, 2, and 3 reporting, and carbon reduction strategies.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and report-writing abilities.
Passion for sustainability and willingness to develop expertise in construction related environmental management.
Desirable (Training Will Be Provided):
Understanding of carbon lifecycle assessments (LCAs) and PAS 2080.
Knowledge of National Grid's environmental and sustainability requirements.
Familiarity with construction materials and carbon-intensive processes.
Exposure to ISO 14040, ISO 14044, PAS 2050, EN 15804, & ISO 14064 standards.
Experience in content creation or social media engagement
Training & Development
Training in carbon lifecycle assessments, Scope 1, 2, and 3 reporting, and National Grid sustainability reporting tools.
Hands-on experience with environmental compliance and sustainability planning in civil engineering projects.
Support to gain professional accreditation (e.g. IEMA Associate Membership).
