The responsibilities for the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology for 2023 are as follows:
  • Positioning the UK at the forefront of global scientific and technological advancement.

  • Delivering talent programmes, physical and digital infrastructure and regulation to support our economy, security and public services.
  • R&D funding
For 2023, our priorities are:
  • Optimise public R&D investment to support areas of relative UK strength and increase the level of private R&D to make our economy the most innovative in the world.
  • Promote a diverse research and innovation system that connects discovery to new companies, growth and jobs \xe2\x80\x93 including by delivering world-class physical and digital infrastructure (such as gigabit broadband), making the UK the best place to start and grow a technology business and developing and attracting top talent.
  • Put our public services \xe2\x80\x93 including the NHS and schools \xe2\x80\x93 at the forefront of innovation, championing new ways of working and the development of in-house STEM capability to improve outcomes for people.

Job description


The International Data Flows Unit\xe2\x80\x99s mission is to champion the international flow of data whilst keeping individual\xe2\x80\x99s data safe. We do this by developing tools and mechanisms to enable flows and collaborating with partners both bilaterally and multilaterally to influence global data governance.

The successful candidate will be part of the team looking to maintain our free flow of data arrangements with the EU/EEA.

Main responsibilities

Support preparations towards the EU\xe2\x80\x99s reassessment of the UK\xe2\x80\x99s data protection framework in 2024-2025.

Support the UK\xe2\x80\x99s approach to reviewing its transitional data bridge decisions for EU Member States and Institutions and coordinate work across the team to commission legal analysis, and undertake assessment/review in line with Ministers\xe2\x80\x99 preferred approach. Skills and experience Essential Criteria:
  • A track record of delivering objectives in a complex policy/political environment.
  • Strong communication skills, and the ability to work across and beyond departmental boundaries.
  • The ability to build and maintain relationships with senior level stakeholders within and externally to government.
  • The ability to think strategically and work with legal and analytical colleagues to produce well evidenced and designed policy recommendations which reflect the risks and benefits of various options.
Desirable Criteria:
  • Familiarity with international data policy.
  • Experience of influencing policy development/delivery internationally.
