Job Description

We are awaiting the outcome of our application for New Degree Awarding Powers and if successful we expect the first intake of students under our own powers in September 2025. Considering this we are making plans for the appointment of External Examiners for our provision for September. We seek expressions of interest for External Examiners for the following programmes in the first instance:


BA (Hons)

Filmmaking and Creative Technologies




BA (Hons)

Acting (Contemporary Performance)




BA (Hons)

Management (with the following optional pathways: Live Events; Music Industry Management; Theatre & Screen)




BA (Hons)

Theatre & Performance Design




BA (Hons)

Theatre & Production Technology

External Examiners will need to be eligible to work in the UK and any appointment will be subject to a successful right to work check. The External Examiner Fee is in line with the sector and available on request.

Criteria for Eligibility of External Examiners





External Examiners will need to demonstrate the following:


Previous experience as an External Examiner in a UK HEI, or a minimum of 4 years' recent experience in an academic position within UK Higher Education and a good demonstrable understanding of the UK Higher Education Sector. Appropriate experience in programme design and student assessment at the level of the award(s) for which they are being nominated. Relevant academic and/or professional qualifications to at least the level of the qualification being externally examined, and/or extensive practitioner experience where appropriate. The necessary academic experience and subject knowledge to assess standards in an effective manner, identify good practice, and recommend enhancements to enable informed course development. Sufficient experience in academic quality assurance to enable them to discharge their role effectively. They comply with all relevant employment legislation, including safeguarding, as appropriate/applicable. They have fluency in English and are eligible to work in the UK. Relevant professional experience, where appropriate.

Role of EE at LIPA





The role of the External Examiner at LIPA is to provide comments and recommendations on:


Whether LIPA is maintaining the threshold academic standards set for awards in accordance with national qualifications frameworks (such as the FHEQ, Characteristics Statements, and applicable Subject Benchmark Statements). Whether the academic standards and the achievements of students are comparable with those in other UK higher education institutions of which External Examiners have experience. Whether the assessment process measures student achievement transparently, rigorously, and fairly against the intended outcomes of the programme(s) and is conducted consistently in line with policies and regulations. Good practice and innovation relating to learning, teaching, and assessment. Opportunities to enhance the quality of the learning opportunities provided to students.

In order to do this, we will require our External Examiner to:


Have sight of and be given the opportunity for feedback prior to the start of the academic year on the form and content of all summative assessments to ensure that all students will be assessed fairly. Engage with the process of moderation for assessed work, and judge whether students have fulfilled the objectives of the programme, the learning outcomes of the modules and reached the required standard. Be able to compare the performance of students with that of their peers on comparable programmes elsewhere. Ensure that assessments are conducted in accordance with the approved regulations. Consider and comment on the effectiveness of the assessments, including alternative assessments where required, the programme and module content. Programme and module amendments, where required and the content and form of referrals. Participate in the work of Boards of Examiners. Provide feedback on Recognition of Prior (Experiential) Learning (RP(E)L) applications and comment on mappings, where required. Meet with students on their designated programme(s) at least once during their period of engagement. Report annually on academic standards, the effectiveness of assessment, and related issues, and on items of good practice, in accordance with the template provided. Be responsible for ensuring the security of all personal data that they use or have access to as part of this role.
