Job Summary



Shredding Machinery Solutions (SMS) is seeking a

highly skilled and self-motivated Field Service Engineer

to join our expanding team. The role involves the

installation

,

preventative maintenance servicing, and breakdown repairs

to ensure

minimum

vehicle off-road time

for shredding equipment installed on

mobile document shredding vehicles

and

static in-plant shredding machinery

at customer sites across

the UK and possibly Germany, France, Switzerland, and other Western European countries.



This position requires

strong problem-solving abilities, mechanical and electrical expertise, and excellent customer service skills

. Engineers will be responsible for ensuring

the safe and efficient operation of machinery

, conducting

risk assessments

, and preparing

method statements

to comply with

Health & Safety regulations

.

Must be fluent in English.



Must adhere to contract Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as agreed with customers.



Key Responsibilities



1. Equipment Installation, Maintenance & Repairs



? Diagnose and repair faults on

shredders and ancillary equipment

installed on

mobile document shredding trucks

and

industrial in-plant shredding equipment.



? Carry out

routine maintenance, servicing, and emergency breakdown repairs

on customer sites.

? Install new machinery and conduct

pre-delivery inspections and customer operative training

before commissioning.

? Ensure all repairs and maintenance are performed

in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and SMS quality standards

.

?Assist with parts stock takes and identification.

2.

Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMS)



? Conduct

site-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)

before commencing work.

? Identify and mitigate

potential hazards

before undertaking any servicing or repair work.

? Ensure compliance with

customer site safety procedures

and

SMS safety protocols

.

? Maintain thorough records of

risk assessments

and ensure they are signed off as required.

3.

Health & Safety Compliance



? Ensure strict

adherence to Health & Safety policies

, including

lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures

.

? Ensure

safe handling of hydraulic and electrical systems

during servicing and repairs.

? Use correct

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),

including

safety boots, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hard hat, and hi-visibility clothing

where appropriate.

? Ensure that the

work area is secure and free from combustible materials

when carrying out

hot works

.

? Be fully aware of

emergency procedures

at customer sites and report any

incidents or near misses

immediately.

4.

Tooling & Equipment



? Engineers must provide

their own hand tools and tool kits

sufficient for carrying out

mechanical and electrical servicing

.

? SMS will supply

specialist tools and equipment

required for specific tasks.

? Conduct

pre-use inspections

on all tools and equipment to ensure they are safe and in good working condition.

? Report any

defective or missing equipment

to the Service Manager immediately.

5.

Customer Service & Communication



? Act as the

first point of contact

for customers regarding

machine servicing and repairs.



? Provide

clear service reports and recommendations

to customers on-site.

? Ensure

professional conduct and communication

when liaising with customers and colleagues.

? Train customers and operators on

basic machine maintenance and troubleshooting

.

6.

Documentation & Reporting



? Complete and submit

detailed service reports

, including parts used and work carried out. Used parts to be returned to stock for disposal.

? Maintain accurate

timesheets, work orders, and expense reports

.

? Provide

service advisories

for additional work required on equipment.

? Update the

Service Manager

on job progress and any

potential issues

that could impact customer operations.

Qualifications & Skills Required



Essential:



?

Fluent in English

(spoken and written).

?

Experience in mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic engineering

(preferably with mobile plant or heavy machinery).

? Proven experience working as a

Field Service Engineer

or similar role.

? Ability to diagnose

electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical faults

.

? Knowledge of

hydraulic systems, sensors, motors, and control panels

.

? Strong understanding of

risk assessments, method statements, and health & safety regulations.



? Experience with

PPE requirements and Lockout/Tagout procedures

.

? Full

valid driving licence (LGV (HGV) licence an advantage).



? Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.

? Ability to

adhere to contract Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

as agreed with customers.

Desirable:

Experience in

shredding equipment, recycling machinery, or mobile industrial equipment

.

Forklift (MHE) and IPAF (Powered Access) license.

Certifications in

welding, fabrication, or electronics

.

Experience using

diagnostic tools and software

.

Previous experience using

BigChange software

.

Additional Information



Engineers must bring valid

licence competencies

for

Material Handling Equipment (MHE), Forklift, and IPAF certification

or be prepared to undertake training.

Engineers will be provided with

SMS-branded PPE

, but must ensure its

correct use and upkeep

.

Overtime, weekend, and call-out work

may be required, with

additional allowances

paid accordingly.

Engineers must be willing to travel to

customer sites across UK and possibly Europe

.
