We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to manage the day-to-day financial operations of the business. The successful candidate will ensure robust financial controls, maintain strong working capital practices, and provide vital support to the Managing Director across cash flow, payments, and financial compliance. You will work closely with outsourced finance partners and internal teams to ensure timely and accurate financial oversight during a key stage of the company's growth.
Oversee daily financial activities including bank reconciliations, supplier payments, credit control, and cash handling.
Manage and schedule payments to UK and international suppliers, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with agreed terms.
Take ownership of day-to-day cash flow management, including monitoring balances and forecasting short- and medium-term liquidity.
Plan and execute currency conversions for supplier payments in different currencies, including timing decisions to optimise foreign exchange rates.
Maintain and improve internal financial controls, systems, and reporting accuracy.
Coordinate with outsourced accounting partners to ensure financial processes are maintained and deliverables are met.
Reporting & Communication
Provide regular cash flow summaries and key financial updates to the Managing Director.
Liaise with external accountants on the delivery of management accounts, VAT returns, and statutory filings.
Ensure reliable processing of all transactional finance activity, including sales, purchases, and bank transactions.
Compliance & Governance
Oversee payroll processes, VAT compliance, and HMRC submissions as required.
Maintain company records and ensure compliance with insurance, statutory, and regulatory obligations.
Systems & Process Improvement
Manage finance software, stock/inventory systems, and CRM integration to support accurate data flow.
Identify and implement opportunities for automation, efficiency, and improved visibility of financial data.
Support other departments with finance-related training or process implementation.
Key RequirementsEssential Skills & Experience
Qualified accountant (ACCA / ACA / CIMA) or qualified by experience in a senior finance role.
At least 3 years' experience in an SME financial controller or similar position.
Strong operational finance background, with practical knowledge of cash flow, supplier payments, and foreign currency management.
Confident with accounting software (e.g. Xero) and strong Excel capabilities.
Demonstrable ability to manage third-party finance providers and internal stakeholders.
Desirable
Experience with stock and inventory accounting.
Knowledge of businesses involved in distribution, ecommerce, or international trade.
Understanding of cost control and commercial finance processes.
