We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Firefighters at the 48 Civil Engineering Squadron, Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath , United Kingdom.

What will be your primary role?



The primary purpose of this position is to serve in a developmental capacity as a Firefighter assigned to drive/operate firefighting vehicles of significant complexity engaged in airfield, structural firefighting, crash-rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Operations to assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards and reacting to the presence or potential releases of hazardous materials as a first responder to protect persons, property, or the environment. You will perform hazard and risk assessment techniques in completing initial incident analysis. You will drive and operate firefighting vehicles, such as pumpers, aerial ladder trucks, and Airport Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles, as well as perform crash-rescue and structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities and where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. Perform rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility. Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities and complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures performing work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment. Perform dispatching duties within the Fire Alarm and Communications Center, as directed.

This is a DEVELOPMENTAL position. To be eligible for promotion all training must be completed and regulatory requirements met, this includes obtaining certification as a "HAZMAT Technician" prior to promotion.

Employee is required to be certified by the Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter Certification System such as: Airport Firefighter (includes Firefighter I, II), HAZMAT Awareness, Operations and to obtain certification in Driver Operator (ARFF, Pumper, Tanker or Aerial - as applicable).

What are the Key Skills required for this role?



1. Knowledge of and experience applying hazardous materials emergency response procedures, equipment, and identification.

2. Knowledge of and experience driving and operating firefighting vehicles of significant complexity; of the principles of hydraulics as they pertain to water flow, water pressure, water levels, line (friction) losses, etc. and of basic and specialized airfield and structural firefighting equipment (fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, etc.), techniques, and procedures.

3. Working knowledge of basic and specialized structural fighting equipment, techniques and procedures and of basic building design, construction, and occupancy. Also knowledge of the latest changes in aircraft cockpit design, ordnance placement, and cabin layouts to include the operation of hatch or canopy release mechanisms, ejection seat mechanisms, and/or oxygen supply systems.

4. Knowledge of and experience applying emergency first aid techniques; and of safety requirements as outlined in applicable safety standards, regulations, and/or technical orders.

5. Skill in operating communications equipment.

6. Ability to maintain good working relations; to communicate orally and in writing; to lift and carry heavy loads; and to apply emergency first aid techniques.

What are the conditions of employment for this role?



1. You will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules and regulations.

2. You may be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft and you may also be required to travel to the US or other country, in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training, this position may also be coded as mission essential.

3. You will be required to complete a 12-month probationary period.

4. Overtime may be required and you may be assigned other duties not included in this position description, but that are appropriate to the grade and required skill set.

5. You must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

6. You must participate in a mandatory physical fitness program and are required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment physical. You may be subject to random drug testing.

7. This position is considered operational; therefore the incumbent is entitled to receive an Operational Firefighter Pay Supplement for working an approved USAFE 'as rostered' shift pattern totaling 192 hours over a 4-week period, which may include weekends and public holidays. You may be subject to recall.

8. This position requires you to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program. The position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.

9. The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, CAT C valid driver's license is required.

10. Special Retirement Provisions Authority: This is a Primary Position; UK retirement rules apply. There is a mandatory retirement age of 60 years for Primary Firefighters hired under the Local National Direct Hire Program.

11. You may be required to also obtain certification For Telecommunicator, Level I & II. Please note: Training plans will be established and monitored by the supervisor and may specify the length of time the employee has to obtain certification. Some training may require recertification on a regular or intermittent basis.
