An exciting entry-level traineeship for UCA recent graduates and current students who want to get experience and to deepen their understanding of how a gallery operates.
As a creative university, we have galleries and exhibition spaces across the Surrey and Kent campuses. Throughout the year, UCA galleries host a dynamic and innovative programme showcasing works and research projects from students, staff as well as from visiting artists and artists-in-residence.
UCA Surrey and Kent Galleries rely on Gallery Assistant casual staff to support the installation and delivery of exhibitions in designated gallery spaces.
The team are employed on casual contracts and are scheduled to work on an 'as and when' basis, dependent on the exhibition programme.
The Gallery Assistants make possible the implementation of the exhibition programmes, due to the labour involved in installing exhibitions to a professional standard.
This role includes learning the below duties, alongside the day-to-day running of a gallery. The successful candidate will learn all the key activities of a gallery assistant including interaction with artists, academics and professionals from the creative industries as well as the general public.
The successful candidate will work with the Curator, gallery team and staff from the different UCA schools to realise exhibitions, events and workshops.
Key activities
Assisting the Curator and Gallery Technician to install/de-install exhibitions in the designated gallery spaces with a priority on public facing galleries.
Hanging 2D/3D art works.
Handling artworks, including unpacking, packing, and wrapping
Supporting with social media, helping with creating content for Instagram and Twitter, creating calendars and schedules posts.
Support with the design of the labels and introduction panels
Assisting with Audio Visual equipment set up and operation.
