Armstrong Priestley is a leading independent fire protection contractor in the UK, specialising in the design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of automatic fire sprinkler systems. We operate our own in-house fabrication facility, managing material stocks, welding, painting, and delivering high standard finished components to projects across the country.

Purpose of the Role



The General Workshop Operative will assist in the fabrication workshop with a variety of tasks to support the manufacture, finishing, and delivery of sprinkler system components. Ensuring high quality, safe working practices, and efficient production in line with Armstrong Priestley's standards.

Key Responsibilities



Assist with fabrication tasks such as cutting, threading, welding, drilling, grinding, and preparing pipework and fittings. Operate and maintain workshop machinery and hand tools safely (e.g. saws, threading machine, grinders, welders, spray booths). Carry out finishing operations (painting, surface preparation) to required standards. Carry out quality checks throughout fabrication to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and internal/external standards. Help to load, unload, and move materials and components within the workshop; ensure materials are stored properly. Keep workshop clean, organised, and safe; maintain good housekeeping. Assist in packing and preparation of components for delivery; help load company vehicles if needed. Support other workshop team members and respond to direction from supervisors. Report any defects, issues, or safety hazards immediately.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience



Preferred:



Experience working in a workshop or fabrication environment. Basic knowledge of welding, metalwork, and pipework fabrication. Competency using hand tools and basic power tools. Understanding of safe working practices and health & safety legislation. Good attention to detail.

Desirable:



Qualifications in fabrication, welding, or metalwork. Experience with finishing techniques (painting, spray booth). Ability to read and interpret technical drawings. Use of lifting equipment or experience in moving heavy materials.

Personal Qualities



Reliable and punctual. Good teamwork and communication skills. Willingness to learn and adapt. Self-motivated and able to work under supervision or independently. Physically fit, as the job involves manual labour and potentially lifting heavy components.

Health, Safety & Compliance



Adhere to all company health & safety procedures, wearing appropriate PPE at all times. Follow risk assessments and safe systems of work. Participate in training and assessments as required. Ensure that all work meets relevant quality and certification standards.
