Main Duties:
To supervise pupils and to undertake associated pastoral duties as well as other general responsibilities in the school as agreed with the Director of Sport having full regard for the school's ethos, aims and policies.
The successful applicant will be required to coach sport at all levels from Year 7 to 13. The applicant will be expected to contribute to the wider games programme, including supporting pre-season training.
The Graduate Sports Assistant will be involved in coaching sport at Wells six days a week, including Saturdays, during term time. This will include a busy timetable within the Physical Education and Sports department, working with specialist PE teachers and games coaches.
It would be ideally suited to those with a passion for sport and young people who are looking to gain relevant experience before embarking on a formal teaching qualification. It would also suit a newly qualified teacher looking to gain experience in a thriving independent boarding school. The candidate will be expected to have expertise in at least one of our core sports (Rugby, Football, Hockey, Netball, Cricket and Tennis).
Particular responsibilities include
Teaching
Planning, coaching and assisting with sessions throughout the year for pupils of all ages and abilities;
To help ensure that pupils are taught according to their individual needs and abilities ensuring that pupils develop at their own pace;
To adopt an approach that engenders enthusiasm and raises the aspirations of all pupils;
To assist with the strength and conditioning of senior school pupils;
To select, manage, and accompany teams throughout the week and on a Saturday;
To officiate School fixtures;
Promote professional standards of punctuality, discipline and sportsmanship with all pupils, taking appropriate action where necessary.
Sport and School Contribution
To contribute to the development of the curriculum, and teaching and learning materials within the department;
To take a full part in appropriate departmental and whole School meetings;
To promote the department and the School through displays of work, extra-curricular activities and participation in events, competitions etc;
To assist the Director of Sport with tracking pupils, risk assessments and other administrative tasks as required;
To ensure that care is taken of sports equipment and that areas are left tidy and in good condition;
All Graduate Sports Assistants are expected to play a full and active role in the life of the School outside of the classroom.
It is not possible to present a definitive list of responsibilities for the Graduate Sports Assistant role, as the role will be developed around the skills and experiences of the successful candidate; at a fundamental level, the successful candidate will have equally active enthusiasm for sport and young people, and a desire to develop their potential.
