Grounds Operative (General)

About the Role



We are seeking a reliable and skilled Grounds Operative to undertake maintenance and upkeep of public parks, schools, playing fields, landscaped areas, and other open spaces. The successful candidate will provide a high-quality grounds maintenance service, ensuring outdoor spaces are safe, clean, and well-maintained.

Key Responsibilities



Perform general maintenance tasks including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and sports field upkeep following approved specifications. Set out and mark sports areas; maintain artificial, synthetic, and natural pitches. Clean public buildings such as changing rooms and toilets, as well as parks, playgrounds, and open spaces. Apply pesticides safely and correctly in line with manufacturer guidelines and current legislation. Work largely unsupervised, taking responsibility for directing trainees or other assigned staff. Operate handheld tools, powered vibrating machinery, tractors, and tractor-mounted equipment as required. Ensure all plant and machinery used are roadworthy, well-maintained, and fitted with necessary safety guards. Conduct visual inspections of playground equipment and maintain records according to safety policies. Comply fully with Health & Safety policies and procedures at all times. Undertake any additional work as instructed within the Environment Department.

Essential Requirements



Full, valid UK driving licence and ability to tow trailers. Experience in gardening, ground maintenance, or related duties. Training in the use of machinery and hand tools including powered vibrating equipment and light plant machinery. Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation, COSHH regulations, and safe working practices. Ability to work independently without supervision. Ability to prioritise tasks and meet scheduled deadlines. Good interpersonal skills, able to liaise effectively with colleagues and the general public. Commitment to the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Candidate must be fit and able to carry out manual grounds maintenance duties.

Desirable Qualifications



NPTC PA6A pesticide application certificate. First Aid qualification.

Language Skills



Welsh: Spoken Level 2, Written Level 1 (desirable but not essential). English: Spoken Level 3, Written Level 3.

This role does not require a DBS check. Commitment to working safely in accordance with all relevant policies and legislation is essential.
