Driving for Change is a ground-breaking initiative run by the Change Please Foundation. We take repurposed iconic London double decker buses to key London Boroughs to provide lifesaving and essential services to the most vulnerable. The services our guests have access to include an NHS and oral healthcare nurses, a hairdresser, social support, digital and financial literacy training and inclusion, financial advice, support with employment and much more.

We have helped so many people through Driving for Change and had great success stories with our guests getting access to the vital help they needed, and then some joining the core Barista Training Programme and securing permanent work through our employment partners.

Role Objective



The Hairdresser / Barber provides basic hairdressing services to individuals experiencing homelessness, delivering support in our Driving for Change buses across various London locations. The Hairdresser / Barberwill use their skills to help restore dignity, confidence, and a sense of self-worth to clients in need.

This role requires adaptability, empathy, and the ability to work in an unconventional setting alongside service support workers and other professionals. By creating a welcoming and supportive environment, the Hairdresser / Barber will contribute positively to the wellbeing of vulnerable individuals, helping them feel valued and respected as part of Change Please's mission to deliver impactful community services.

Reporting



The role will report to our Julian Harvey, DFC - Operations Manager - with regular contact and interaction with all members of the Impact team as well as the extended business.

Role and Responsibilities:



The hairdresser will be responsible for welcoming clients on the bus, maintaining a clean and organised workspace, and recommending appropriate hair care products. They should also be able to recognise chronic scalp conditions and advise clients to seek medical assistance if needed.

To excel in this role with Driving for Change, the hairdresser must be a team player, adaptable to new situations, and willing to travel regularly with the bus.

They should be detail-oriented and able to connect well with clients, following instructions effectively while demonstrating strong communication skills.

Additionally, the hairdresser will occasionally participate in organisational inductions, presenting to partner services on the role and impact of the service we provide to individuals experiencing homelessness.

Barber Responsibilities:



Consult with clients to understand their hairdressing needs and preferences. Advise clients on appropriate hairstyles, clarifying that we provide basic cuts rather than salon-style services. Perform haircuts, trims, and shape hair as needed. Use various tools to style clients' hair according to their preferences. Ensure all tools and instruments are sterilised to maintain health and safety standards. Clean and organise the workstation at the end of each shift, removing rubbish and reporting any issues to the Service Support Officer. Manage stock levels and inform the Service Support Officer of any required products or tools. Report directly to the Service Support Officer on the bus, following instructions as provided. Participate in inductions for visitors or services to the bus. Assist with training or mentoring new team members on the bus.

Core Competencies/Skills Required:



Relevant qualification in hairdressing. Appropriate insurance coverage (e.g., Public Liability Insurance). Ability to stand for long periods and handle physical demands of the role. Strong organisational and time management skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure and follow instructions. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Patience, attention to detail, and a client-centred approach.

: 13.85 per hour

Schedule:

Monday to Friday, between 16 hours to 30 hours weekly( 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM)
