To carry out a variety of maintenance, repair, and basic improvement tasks to ensure the care home remains safe, well-presented, and fully operational. The role supports residents, staff, and visitors by maintaining a comfortable, hazard-free environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. General Maintenance
Perform routine repairs to fixtures, fittings, and equipment (e.g., doors, windows, locks, furniture).
Carry out minor plumbing tasks (e.g., unblocking sinks, replacing washers).
Replace light bulbs, batteries, and basic electrical fittings.
Undertake painting, decorating, and touch-up work as needed.
2. Safety & Compliance
Conduct regular checks of fire alarms, emergency lighting, call bells, and safety equipment.
Ensure walkways, entrances, and garden paths are clear and safe.
Assist in compliance with health & safety, infection control, and building regulations.
Report hazards, defects, or potential risks immediately.
3. Grounds & Exterior
Maintain outdoor areas, including basic gardening, clearing leaves, and snow/ice gritting in winter.
Keep external areas tidy, free from litter, and safe for residents.
4. Supporting the Care Home
Help move furniture and equipment for events, activities, or room changes.
Assist residents and staff with minor practical needs where appropriate.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff.
5. Record Keeping
Maintain a log of all repairs, safety checks, and completed work.
Ensure tools and equipment are stored safely and kept in good condition.
Skills & Qualities
Practical skills across basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and decorating.
Good understanding of health & safety requirements.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
Flexible, approachable, and respectful toward older adults.
Physically fit for manual work, lifting, and outdoor tasks.
Qualifications & Experience
Previous experience in a maintenance or handyperson role (care environment desirable but not essential).
Basic knowledge of building systems and repairs.
Health & Safety awareness training (preferred).
Driving licence may be required for some locations.
Hours & Pay
Full-time
Occasional on-call or emergency repairs outside normal hours.

Contract length: 12 months
Pay: 13.50-15.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 35 per week
