We're seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Commercial to lead Council's legal functions across contracts, property, and planning. This senior interim position will oversee a team of legal professionals, providing expert advice on complex planning and highways matters, including drafting and negotiating Section 106, 38, and 278 agreements. The successful candidate will act as deputy to the Monitoring Officer and play a key role in corporate governance and committee advisory work.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead, manage, and support a team of planning, property, and contracts lawyers.
Draft and negotiate s106, s38, and s278 agreements and other planning/highways documents.
Provide high-level legal advice on planning, highways, and governance issues.
Advise councillors and committees, including attending Planning Committee meetings.
Contribute to strategic decisions as part of the Legal Services Management Team.
Deputise for the Monitoring Officer and support corporate governance.
Candidate Requirements:
Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with local authority or public sector experience.
Significant expertise in planning, highways, and local government law.
Proven leadership and ability to manage legal teams effectively.
Excellent drafting, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 6 months
Pay: 50.00-60.00 per hour
