Description





The Head of Commercial is responsible for leading the company's strategic delivery of its commercial business portfolio which currently includes: Electrical & Plumbing Contracting, Retail (shop), Property, and broader commercial agreements including fibre. There is also scope to take on management of Guernsey Network Services in the future. The role includes external future horizon planning for new commercially-orientated threats and opportunities, understanding emerging markets, improving customer service, responsibility for growing existing commercial sales, taking advantage of new market opportunities as they arise and ensuring adherence to all associated regulations including specifically, those relating to health and safety. The role will also ensure that there is alignment between core company strategy/risk appetite and the diverse businesses of the portfolio whilst enabling their effective commercial operation in competitive markets.

The Head of Commercial will need to initiate and communicate an impactful vision for the direction and development of the commercial function. This will include setting market retention and acquisition targets and identifying opportunities in other traditional energy markets to utilise new and emerging technologies. This will require various policies, standards and working practices to be developed to deliver these services and to provide a future orientated and cost-efficient customer experience.###

Key Responsibilities





Strategic Business Planning


Lead the development and oversee the execution of agreed commercial strategies for GEL including those associated with energy transition solutions and services, sales and marketing and the provision of an excellent customer experience.

Operational Leadership


Develop a cohesive and consistent management/leadership team focussed on efficient operations and effective risk management. Develop and evidence strong relationships with internal and external customers. Provide excellent project management/ planning/ change management. Actively demonstrate a commitment to open and effective dialogue with stakeholders. Develop existing systems and processes to ensure the appropriate level of integration/ reporting back into core company systems. Develop and maintain reporting on an agreed appropriate KPI suite to manage performance and drive change in line with aspirations and requirements.

Financial Management


Set growth, commercial revenue and profitability targets for the commercial businesses. Develop business cases for investments to meet the demands of the 'customer of the future' and leverage market opportunities. Operate within budget and actively work to minimise cost through efficiencies. Ensure financial reports are accurate and completed on time. Ensure funding or revenue savings are part of business as usual. Operate with appropriate levels of financial control and risk management given the nature of the business to balance the ability to compete against the need to follow core business procedures.

Commercial Leadership


Identify and pursue available and potential opportunities in the energy market to include collaboration/partnerships, pan Channel Island growth, joint ventures, technological developments and new sales channels. Develop new products/packaged services to gain market share and/or greater customer spend. Ensure the appropriate corporate structure to segregate activities from the core utility business whilst respecting and incorporating its needs.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise





Demonstrable and applicable commercial leadership experience in one or more of the operational sectors. Progress towards or completion of Chartered Director accreditation. Experience in governance, strategy and risk management. Solid understanding of the businesses and industry. Demonstrable ability in assessing detailed financial and technical data and forming strategies in a fast-changing environment. Strong project management skills and results oriented. Good understanding of accounting standards and principles for tracing and modelling expenditure. Ability to build teams, sponsor change/continuous improvement and drive superior customer service. Strong leadership, influencing, communication and negotiation skills. Highly effective decision maker. Ability to work to demanding targets and deadlines while maintaining a high degree of personal and team organisation and focus. Ability to build relationships both internally and with external stakeholders.
