The Opportunity:

We\'re looking for a technical leader to build and support our portfolio of startups, with a mix of hands-on execution and strategy. You\'ll be working across a diverse portfolio of ambitious early-stage founders, with an opportunity to work across various domains, technologies, and products. In our venture studio, you will have the unique opportunity to help define, and build new ventures from scratch, in sectors ranging from finance to telecommunications, with the support and backing of the largest corporate partners in the world. Our vision is to build a body of knowledge that will become the global blueprint for how to build the leading technology businesses of the future. We are looking for someone who shares that ambition and has the passion and expertise to achieve it.

What you\'ll do:

As our Head of Engineering, you will operate like a technical co-founder in residence and help turn new ideas into tangible outcomes. You will need to be able to inspire top technical talent whilst being able to deal with immense uncertainty and solve problems. You will work closely with our founders to understand their business needs, evaluate and mentor new technical leaders, and fill the gaps where required. In addition, you will engage with our wider tech community: hosting events, acting as a thought leader, and facilitating knowledge sharing. To be successful in this role, you should have previous experience leading engineering teams to build secure, resilient and scalable platform solutions.

Building new ventures from scratch:

  • Rapidly evaluate new business opportunities across multiple industries and confidently collaborate with our Venture design team to support the validation process by defining technical feasibility for all investment committee decisions. You will be expected to experiment and prototype solutions in a fast paced environment
  • Set the technical direction and provide technical expertise to help shape a big vision for each venture by leading the development and implementation of new ventures and productsYou will work with cross-functional teams for each studio venture and act as the key technical stakeholder.
  • Alongside the team, you will turn ambiguous ideas into a product MVP within 6 months, validating your decisions commercially along the way, so that a founding team can grow from that MVP into a fully-fledged business.
  • Provide continuity through transitions of the venture studio process by understanding the history and context of the venture when onboarding new technical leadership into the businessIdentify improvements that can be implemented with new tools, workflows, processes, or structural changes and periodically review project progress to drive high quality outcomes
Leading technical strategy:
  • Provide technical & strategic mentorship and guidance to the founders you support and the technical talent that works with them
  • Be the face of Founders Factory for our tech community, nurturing that network as a rich source of studio talent
  • Ensure learnings from each studio venture and our broader tech leadership community are brought together to feed back into consistent best practices and processes
  • Work with the talent team to evaluate exceptional founders who align with our new ventures and be a key decision maker for our internal investment committees
  • Evaluate the technical capabilities of candidates for our early-stage teams: from tech co-founders to dev contractors
Advising the accelerator portfolio:
  • Support the tech leads of our startup teams to help set their product & technical strategy
  • Apply your own diverse software development skills, knowledge & experience across a range of sectors, business models, & products
  • Ensure learnings from each team & project are brought together to feed back into consistent best practices and processes for the new startups we\'re building
  • Provide technical & career mentorship for the members of the tech team
Previous experience:
  • Previous experience as a technical founder of an early stage startup
  • 8+ years of total engineering experience with deep experience of building engaging products
  • You have a proven track record of shipping products, getting stuff done, and working in high growth product focussed organisations with an appreciation of new technologies and tools
  • You have a strong product and customer mentality. You care deeply about building products balancing speed and scale
  • Being able to switch between hands-on execution and strategic advice, as needed. You should expect to write some code, write a mobile or website app from scratch, designing the infrastructure, setting up the databases, API, etc
  • Have a genuine interest in mentoring, coaching, and community building whilst being enthusiastic about matching great talent with the opportunities available across our portfolio
  • You maintain an active network of relationships with business leaders, software engineers and innovators across the tech industry.

  • Have an ability to connect and collaborate with top tier founder talent
  • Deals comfortably with the uncertainty of change and complex problems, effectively handles risk and can make a decision with incomplete information
  • Operates effectively, is calm under pressure and productive when plate spinning or when the future is unclear
  • Have a strong bias for action and persists in accomplishing objectives despite setbacks (the hard thing about hard things is that they are f**king hard)
  • Has an approach to management that involves trusting other people, removing roadblocks
  • Able to understand the perspective of others and evaluate their own thinking whilst looking for feedback and continuously improve
  • Ability to work across geographies, time zones and multi-functional teams

Remote working Opportunities: Up to 5 weeks working abroad allowance each year
