Job Description


A new role in the Technology leadership team, the Head of Engineering leads, ensures quality, sets ways of working and manages the organisation\'s engineering department.

The Head of Engineering spearheads innovation in the engineering function, ensuring high quality delivery and running of MO\'s technology software. They define ways of working and best practices, as well as developing tools and approaches to ensure the successful delivery and ongoing management of software in MO.

The Head of Engineering also drives high-quality pastoral care and career progression for software and quality engineers in MO.

As Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for:

Technical Leadership:

  • Provide technical leadership and vision to guide the engineering and quality teams in developing cutting-edge, innovative solutions and products.
  • Horizon-scan for future technologies and engineering best practices, ensuring these are appropriately embedded in MO.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management and design, to align engineering efforts with business and strategic objectives.
Quality and Best Practices:
  • Establish engineering best practices, coding standards, and quality assurance processes.
  • Drive a strong focus on software testing, code reviews, and documentation to deliver reliable and high-quality products.
Identify, defining and embedding delivery ways of working within MO to deliver quality software, based on industry best practice, ensuring alignment to product and innovation ways of working.

Technical Delivery:
  • Oversee the technical delivery of projects within MO, bringing together devops, build and testing in projects.
  • Drive delivery efficiency in the area through use of technology and automation.
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration between engineering teams and other departments within the organisation.
  • Work closely with product teams and key stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure engineering solutions meet business needs.
Resource Management:
  • Work closely with project and product teams to flexibly resource teams and deliver software for MO
  • Build cross skilled internal software engineering teams to deliver projects and products across MO
Budgeting, Supplier and Cost Control:
  • Prepare and manage the Engineering department budget, controlling expenses, and optimising spending while maintaining high standards of service delivery.
  • Manage department suppliers appropriately ensuring value for money, and the timely delivery of services, aligning to the technology and company procurement and supplier strategy requirements.
Team Leadership:
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire the Engineering team, ensuring team members have the necessary resources and support to excel in their roles.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability and collaboration within the team and across departments.
  • Define ways of working, agile coaching and standards for Engineering in MO technology.
  • Work with key partners in the business to define ways of working and build up a consistent approach to Engineering where appropriate.
  • Build new Engineering capabilities where there are gaps in the existing organisation.

Minimum Criteria
  • Proven significant senior experience in leading and managing engineering teams in a technology-driven organisation.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse team.
  • Leadership qualities, including strategic thinking, influencing, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong technical background with hands-on experience in software development and engineering principles.
  • Exceptional project management skills with a track record of delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation, foster a positive work environment, and inspire teams to achieve their best.
  • Strong and proven understanding of agile methodologies and product development life cycle.
  • Experience with scaling and optimising engineering processes to support growth.
  • A strategic and entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to align engineering efforts with the company\'s overall vision and goals.
