We now have the opportunity for a high performing Health & Safety professional to join us in the critical position of Head of Health & Safety for our UK & Ireland business. This is a unique opportunity to join an organisation where Health & Safety is at the heart of what we do at SYSTRA and deliver to our clients through key infrastructure design projects. The role would ideally be based from either our Manchester, York or Birmingham offices with the flexibility of our hybrid working approach.

The Head of Health & Safety will lead, develop and deliver the company health, safety and security (3S) strategy for safety management and occupational health. Manage the implementation of health and safety policies and procedures, adopting best practice and ensuring the H&S responsibilities are adopted throughout the business. Work with the Executive Team to agree the strategy and collaborate with stakeholders across the business to deliver the strategy.

Main Duties

  • Lead on all activities relating to Safety Management and Occupational Health, reporting and investigating accidents, and develop policy and processes and produce and deliver briefing materials
  • Deputy responsibility for Rail Operations, Health and Wellbeing, Assessing First Aid requirements for standard activities on site Lead safety critical activities for Health and Safety risks and assessments
  • Oversea and management of Fatigue / working hours
  • Ensure statutory guidance is complied with by new Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, H.S.E. Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice are brought to the attention of the Board of Directors
  • To lead on awareness of Company related health and safety matters to the attention of the Board of Directors at regular intervals, produce management reports, newsletters, bulletins and alerts
  • Review working practices to ensure these are safe and comply with legislation, industry standards and client requirements
  • Ensure effective communication channels are in place to ensure Health & Safety matters can be raised and addressed speedily and efficiently
  • Maintain RISQS certification
  • Manage the risk assessment process and implement control measures to ALARP principles
  • Review existing and prepare safe operational procedures which identify and take account of all relevant hazards
  • Manage site inspections to ensure compliance to the company\'s policies and procedures
  • Maintain records of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including that of:
  • Accidents/Incidents/Close Calls and Near Misses
  • Leadership Engagement Tours
  • Site Visits
  • Take Time
  • Collate KPI information, undertake analysis and identify trends and detail findings within a monthly report
  • Ensure knowledge of all Health & Safety legislation is current and remain up to date with new legislation and any developments that affect the employer\'s industry
  • Remain up to date with industry standards including:
  • RSSB Group Standards
  • Rule Book GE/RT8000
  • Network Rail Company Standards
  • RAIB Findings and Recommendations
  • Achilles RISQS Core Module and Product requirements
  • ISO Standards, including: 9001, 14001, 18001, 27000, 11000, 45001
  • Lead inhouse training with managers and employees of health and safety issues and risks
  • Maintain Business Continuity and Emergency procedures
  • Manage the health and safety budget in support of the execution of the Health & Safety annual plan, H&S team and supply chain
Experience Required
  • NEBOSH Diploma/Degree and a proven track record of delivering health & safety compliance and improvements
  • Experience in the Engineering and Construction Sectors
  • Complex stakeholder engagement and management capabilities
  • Proven track record of developing and delivering a programme to drive health and safety compliance & improvement
  • Ability to manage an in-house team and supply chain
  • Awareness of multidisciplinary aspects of operating in the construction industry supply chain
  • Appreciation of safety implications of working practices and understanding of construction site/manufacturing responsibilities
  • Good commercial awareness including programming and delivery to budget/timescales
  • Ability to undertake and investigate incidents, compliance issues and improvement outcomes using best industry practice
  • Good knowledge of CDM
  • Experience of operating in a Rail or Consultancy environment
  • Able to prepare Construction Phase Plans
  • Able to review WPPs, TBS and Method Statements
  • Able to undertake the role of Responsible Manager for SSOWPC
  • Experience in Microsoft Office products
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of NEBOSH General Certificate
  • Chartered Member of IOSH
  • Ability to travel to client sites and other SYSTRA offices will be required
