Sussex Community Dermatology Service (SCDS) is a busy, forward-thinking community service providing expert dermatology care across Coastal West Sussex, Surrey, Horsham, Mid Sussex, and West Kent. Our multidisciplinary team includes Consultant Dermatologists, GPwSIs, Registered Nurses, and Health Care Assistants. We are committed to a "see and treat" approach to streamline care and reduce unnecessary follow-ups. Services include minor surgery, day case procedures, patch testing, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and phototherapy.
Job summary
The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) plays a key role in supporting the clinical team in the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred dermatology care. This includes preparing and maintaining clinical areas and equipment, assisting during patient appointments, and supporting registered nurses and doctors with clinical procedures including minor surgery.
You will also be required to carry out
Teledermoscopy clinics one to two days per week
, which involves taking clinical photographs of skin lesions and securely uploading them to our digital systems for specialist review. Full training will be provided.
This is a full-time role requiring flexibility to travel to various clinic locations across Mid Sussex and Surrey. Horsham, Crawley, Redhill, Cranleigh, Frimley and Send.
Main duties of the job
Prepare clinics and equipment in advance of patient appointments
Ensure all medical equipment is clean, safe, and in working order
Support patients before, during, and after appointments
Assist RGN/Doctors with clinical procedures, including minor surgery
Carry out Teledermoscopy clinics, including taking photographs of lesions and uploading them to clinical systems
Maintain patient dignity, safety, and confidentiality always
Follow all infection control and health & safety policies
Report any concerns or incidents appropriately
Person Specification
NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care - or working towards
Experience
Experience in a healthcare or care environment (clinical preferred)
Good understanding of infection control, hygiene, and safety procedures
Desirable
Experience or interest in dermatology or minor surgery
Awareness of basic emergency care and risk management procedures
Skills
Essential
Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Full, clean driving licence and own transport
