Sussex Community Dermatology Service (SCDS) is a busy, forward-thinking community service providing expert dermatology care across Coastal West Sussex, Surrey, Horsham, Mid Sussex, and North and West Kent. Our multidisciplinary team includes Consultant Dermatologists, GPwSIs, Registered Nurses, and Health Care Assistants. We are committed to a "see and treat" approach to streamline care and reduce unnecessary follow-ups. Services include minor surgery, day case procedures, patch testing, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and phototherapy.
Job summary
The purpose of the Healthcare Assistant is to actively support the work of the service and its staff in delivering quality healthcare and expert dermatology advice and treatment.
Our Organisation is expanding its innovative Teledermoscopy service and the successful candidate will be trained to help support this service. You will be required to carry out Teledermoscopy clinics of your own, which involves taking clinical photographs of skin lesions and securely uploading them to our digital systems for specialist review. You'll play a key role in supporting the early assessment and triage of skin conditions by capturing high-quality clinical and dermatoscopic images for remote Consultant Dermatologist review. Full training will be provided.
This is a full-time role (or could be covered by 2 x part time staff) requiring flexibility to travel to multiple clinic locations when required.
The role is based in Worthing but will require travel to Bognor Regis and other Sussex based clinics locations as we expand the service.
Key responsibilities
Clinical Imaging & Patient Interaction
Welcome patients, explain the teledermoscopy process, and obtain informed consent for imaging.
Capture accurate and high-quality clinical photographs and dermatoscopic images of skin lesions and conditions, following established imaging protocols.
Ensure correct labelling, documentation, and secure uploading of images to the electronic patient record system for Consultant review.
Support patients with comfort, dignity, and sensitivity during all procedures.
Dermatology Service Support
Assist in preparing clinical areas, ensuring all equipment (including dermatoscopes, cameras, mobile devices, and lighting) is operational and meets infection prevention measures.
Record patient information and update electronic systems accurately and promptly.
Assist patients prior to, during and after their appointments and support the Doctors with clinical care duties, including assisting with minor surgery.
Support dermatology clinicians and administrative teams with smooth clinic flow and patient communications.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control (IPC) in line with NHS and organisational policies.
Follow data protection, confidentiality, and safeguarding requirements at all times.
Participate in audits, image quality checks, and service improvement initiatives.
Person Specification
NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care - or working towards
Experience
Experience in a healthcare or care environment (clinical preferred)
Good understanding of infection control, hygiene, and safety procedures
Desirable
Experience or interest in dermatology or minor surgery
Awareness of basic emergency care and risk management procedures
Previous experience in dermatology, telemedicine, or clinical photography.
Skills
Essential
Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Full, clean driving licence and own transport
Training & Development
Full training will be provided in:
Dermatoscopic and clinical imaging techniques
Use of electronic patient record systems and secure digital systems.
Recognition of red-flag symptoms and escalation pathways.
Dermatology basics relevant to the role.
