Working collaboratively with the Nurse, the Healthcare support worker will administer first aid and assist with patient care, including simple clinical procedures and supporting children with medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and epilepsy. The role also includes keeping and updating computerised and paper records appropriately, assisting with dispensing medications under the direction of the Nurse, in line with the school medication protocols.
Applicants must be a team player, empathetic, approachable, an excellent communicator, well organised and demonstrate initiative. Essential to the role is a high level of confidentiality and integrity and experience of working with young people in a pastoral or medical setting with a minimum of 1 years' experience.
When no medical support is required, mental health support may be required in the absence of our mental health support worker. This role is only suitable for candidates who are robust and able to cope in often stressful and sometimes upsetting situations.
We are looking for a highly motivated, autonomous individual to assist in the delivery of high-quality care to students and staff. The candidate must be able to work unsupervised during the school day, across both school sites in the absence of the school nurse and will be required to take on medical responsibility in the nurse's absence.
The Team
The role of Healthcare support worker will form part of our exceptional Student Support team. The purpose of the Student Support Team is to provide key support for the learning and welfare of all Students. Members of the team work at both the Tonbridge and Sevenoaks campuses. The team is led by a Deputy Headteacher and consists of a range of posts including Family Liaison Managers, School Counsellors, a school Nurse and Health Care Assistant, and Student Support Receptionists.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Administering medication
Stock checking of medications including audits
Administer first aid and care for pupils referred by staff or self-referred until they can return to lessons or are passed into the care of a parent, guardian, doctor, hospital etc and accurately recording all visits and treatment/advice given.
Mental health support for students when required
Supporting students who are unwell with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy and sickle cell disease and to promote and protect the optimal health status of the students at the school
Providing administrative support such as record-keeping and maintaining Health Care Plans
Administration required for trips and visits, e.g. preparation of first aid and medical supplies, provision of medical notes for trip leaders
Working collaboratively with Student Support team
Responding to calls and emails to staff, parents and other professionals involved in the student's care
Attending training courses for students who suffer from complex health issues such as diabetes, epilepsy and asthma
Triage and treat pupils reporting to other members of the Student Services team where relevant e.g. mental health concerns delegated to the mental health support worker
Respond to emergencies, unwell or injured students or staff around the school site
To co-operate with and maintain good working relationships with both the multidisciplinary team and other Healthcare and Social Care professionals. Have an empathetic approach to patients, carers and relatives, answering any queries, suggestions or concerns they may have where possible, referring them to the registered nurse where appropriate.
Provision of Healthcare:
To ensure that high-quality and effective care is provided to both students and staff
To observe and monitor the wellbeing of patients and report any different physical, mental or emotional behaviours to the School Nurse and Learning Support team for further observation
To welcome staff and students to Student Services in a friendly, reassuring & accommodating manner, responding to enquiries efficiently
To maintain an environment that meets the needs of the patient
To sustain patient confidentiality and be sensitive to personal health concerns
To actively support the holistic well-being of all students
To support the School Nurse in developing School provision for healthcare and wellbeing, to ensure day-to-day student needs are met, such as suitable access to sanitary products and care for minor injuries
To maintain the cleanliness of Student Services, ensuring that the correct sanitation is used in line with current guidelines
To liaise with external agencies as deemed appropriate by the School Nurse
To store medical supplies and drugs effectively
Administration:
To adhere to statutory Health & Safety and Data Protection Legislation, as well as GDPR
To assist with the organisation of First Aid training for relevant staff and file valid qualifications
To ensure stocks of cleaning, pharmaceutical and clinical goods are maintained, and to order as required
To ensure comprehensive notes and records are made in relation to incidents/accidents, and reported to relevant staff as necessary within the appropriate confines of confidentiality
To distribute First Aid supplies throughout the School as required
To maintain general office supplies.
