We have an exciting opportunity for a higher scientist to join the tribology area in the Advanced Engineering Measurements group based in Teddington. The successful candidate will be working within NPL\'s Tribological Laboratories which is home to unique facilities that support UK industry, alongside a team of internationally leading scientists. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Sharing your learnings so that we all benefit and mentoring those with less experience than you
  • Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
  • Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and being willing to promote what we do
  • Providing technical support for any bids, we may be undertaking

About You

We are looking for a self-motivated scientist/engineer who has an interest to develop a career in materials science with a special interest in instrumentation for friction and wear measurements. As a Higher Scientist you\'ll be able to work independently and as part of a team. Your role will involve experimental work in the laboratory, data analysis and presentation, paper writing and customer facing activities. You\'ll be able to solve problems in the laboratory as they arise and ensure timely delivery of research and commercial contracts for industrial and academic customers.

Desired skills and experience
  • The candidate must have an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Physics or Chemistry and preferably hold a relevant postgraduate degree.
  • Demonstrable capability for scientific problem solving using digital tools.
  • Experience in research science would be preferable but not essential.
  • Training will be provided, but you will need to have a willingness to learn and develop through self directed learning.
  • It is important that you have good interpersonal skills and work well in a team both in person and online.
  • A positive attitude coupled with rigorous attention to detail is essential.
Example Responsibilities
  • Support the Technical Lead to design, instrument and analyse friction and wear experiments.
  • Operation of laboratory equipment for testing and analysis.
  • Analysis of experimental data including preparation of internal and external reports.
  • Interaction and communication with customer contacts, regulators, and research institutes.
  • Adherence to company and client quality and health and safety protocols.
  • Working with the laboratory team to prepare samples, repair, calibrate /maintain test equipment.
