Nursery Production Manager

Perrywood Garden Centre & Nurseries

Full-time (Working 5 days Monday to Friday)

Salary: 30,000 per annum

This is an exciting time and a great opportunity for an enthusiastic, energetic individual to join our team in our plant nursery, working across all three centres: Perrywood Tiptree, Sudbury, and Buckhatch. The role does not require horticultural experience but would suit someone with a process or team management background.

Your responsibilities will include management of a small team and overseeing the smooth running of partly mechanised production lines, to help run and develop the plant production department, and to drive one of our values, which is to get plants into people's lives.

We are a family-owned and run business that has been growing plants since the 1950s. Our Tiptree Garden Centre is ranked number 1 in the Garden Centre Association UK league table. Our long-term vision is to inspire people to get more plants in their lives, and the Perrywood Grown range of plants is a core part of the business.

Our nursery grows over 1 million plants annually and they are grown exclusively for our three Perrywood stores. The nursery includes a propagation house and a modern warehouse housing a potting machine, transplanter and seeder.

You will be ultimately responsible for the smooth running of all production lines and the quality of output of plants. Once you have the overall goals for the season you will develop production plans, plan and organise day to day work leading a small team to complete tasks efficiently to a high standard of output, and manage any resources you need i.e., compost, pots/packs, labels and potential staff we may need for busy seasons.

Key Duties

Manage plant nursery production lines. A process and logistic role - horticulture skills are an advantage, but not necessary. Lead a small team to plan and organise day-to-day work, working out the order of production and organising the production schedule (Directed by the Nursery Operations Manager, which feeds into the overall business strategy) and create a positive culture that is focused on maintaining high standards by inspiring and developing talent within your team. Conducting informal and formal catch-ups, coaching and supporting them to be the 'best they can be' in their role, managing performance, managing absence and holidays, and organising training & development opportunities. Responsible for seasonal recruitment. Managing goods in and dispatch to Sudbury & Buckhatch. Ensuring we meet a high level of standards with Machine setup/production, planting, watering, cleanliness, and communication between departments. Admin tasks, tracking stock, ordering consumables. Working with the Health and Safety Manager to support the implementation of health & safety procedures to ensure company compliance and staff safety. Assist the team in key tasks and cover their absences - Stock movements, machine cover. Forklift truck experience (Not essential)

Requirements

Leadership, management and coaching skills A good understanding of warehouse production and logistics and distribution. Excellent communication skills, with a confident approach to supervising a team. Ability to lift and carry e.g. moving stock, operating machinery (Training provided).

You can lead with authority and inspire and motivate your team, acting as a positive role model and encouraging each team member to be their best. You are a clear communicator and can use a variety of methods to keep the team well informed. You react well in a crisis and can think on your feet to problem solve.
