Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for teaching and research in tropical diseases. Through close partnerships with governments, global institutions, non-profit and private organisations and we aim to promote improved health, particularly for people in the least developed countries in the tropics and sub-tropics.
We are looking to hire a HR Manager to join our People Services team, who will specialise in employee relations and policy. This is a pivotal role where you will shape our people strategy, influence change, and ensure our workplace remains fair, inclusive, and compliant. You will be the go-to expert for all matters relating to employee relations, policy, and employment legislation, while also leading on wellbeing initiatives and using workforce data to inform decision-making.
Responsibilities include:
Managing core ER processes including disciplinary, grievance, performance, redundancy, and more
Providing expert advice to managers and staff on employment legislation, policies, and best practice
Leading policy creation, review, and implementation to ensure compliance and clarity
Acting as the HR lead on complex ER cases, ensuring timely, fair, and effective resolution
Supporting UKVI compliance and advising on visas and immigration matters
Championing wellbeing initiatives and contributing to our Welfare Strategy
Analysing HR data and case trends to recommend proactive interventions
The ideal candidate will bring:
MCIPD or equivalent professional qualification
Extensive knowledge of UK employment and equality legislation
Proven experience in managing complex ER cases within a busy HR function
Strong communication, influencing, and relationship-building skills
Ability to analyse HR data, draw insights, and make evidence-based recommendations
Flexible, pragmatic, and able to work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines
Previous experience within a higher education setting would be advantageous, but is not essential.
