An exciting opportunity is available for a

Hydrogen Design Engineer

to support the delivery of a major

Front-End Engineering Design (FEED)

project focused on developing new hydrogen gas infrastructure in the North East of England.

This role will support the coordination and management of internal and external engineering and design packages, working closely with design consultants and project stakeholders to ensure technical queries are resolved and engineering outputs are delivered to programme, quality and safety requirements.

About the Project



The project aims to establish a

100% hydrogen transmission and distribution network

, connecting hydrogen production, storage facilities and large industrial and commercial users. Following successful feasibility and pre-FEED phases, the project has now entered a two-year FEED stage to develop a technically robust and investable solution that will support the decarbonisation of industrial processes across multiple regions in the North East.

The Role



You will be embedded within the project team and play a key role in supporting the FEED Engineering and Design workstream. The role requires strong technical capability, excellent coordination skills and the ability to work collaboratively with consultants and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities



Source and provide technical information required by design consultants. Manage sections of external design and engineering consultants' work packages. Respond to, coordinate and close out technical queries. Review, check and comment on design deliverables produced by consultants. Carry out engineering design activities for hydrogen infrastructure, including pipeline sizing and pressure drop calculations. Contribute to technical reports, front-end engineering studies and basis of design documents. Provide engineering input to other project functions and disciplines. Ensure all engineering works comply with relevant standards and company specifications. Lead and participate in design meetings with internal teams and external consultants. Participate in risk workshops and support risk management activities. Review datasheets and equipment specifications.

Essential Qualifications & Experience



Minimum

5 years' experience

in the design of gas transmission and distribution networks. Knowledge and understanding of gas distribution network operations. Experience designing pipelines and above-ground installations across all pressure tiers. Experience carrying out design appraisals (formal design appraisal qualifications desirable). Experience using databases and mapping/design software such as

GIS or CAD

. Experience with network modelling and analytical tools within the gas or utilities sector (e.g. Synergi Gas, GIS). Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret complex data. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders. Logical, structured problem-solving approach. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Some exposure to project management and planning activities.

Skills & Competencies



Strong understanding of engineering and design requirements for major UK infrastructure projects. Proactive, organised and solution-focused mindset. Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills. Ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced project environment.

Desirable Qualifications



Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar. Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
