The work of the immigration department is varied and covers all aspects of immigration, nationality and asylum law at all levels. The current Immigration team's clients are a mixture of privately paying and legally aided clients. The majority of our clients are individuals, although we also have corporate clients. We have close links with a number of community and advisory groups.
Our client base is wide, and our clients are based all over the UK as well a abroad. Although the firm remains committed to publicly funded work, the aim of this post is to continue to support our privately paying client base. As a result, the post holder will be expected to achieve a balanced practice between private clients and legal aid work. The balance of the caseload will depend on the needs of the team as a whole and in discussion with the heads of the department.
In order to be able to work fully within the team, the Applicant will be expected to be accredited as a senior caseworker and a supervising senior caseworker within the Law Society's Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme and to maintain accreditation.
Key responsibilities:
to undertake fee earning work;
to make a positive contribution to the work of the department and to the firm. Applicant to be responsible for an active case load dealing with a wide range of immigration issues, corporate and individual clients including applications under the Points Based System and other business/work related applications, Sponsor License applications, student and visitor applications, family reunion, removal, adoption and other children's cases, port cases, detained cases including bail and damages cases, and applications under concessions and outside the rules.
to ensure proper time recording and prompt billing to meet the post holder's set billing target.
Report directly to Head of Department
Responsible for all aspects of Immigration work including providing technical expertise and guidance to other team members
Ability to manage and supervise Trainee Solicitors and Caseworkers to manage appropriate caseload types and complexities
Preparing and managing funding applications to the Legal Aid Agency,
Preparing draft documents including witness statements and processing evidence
Preparing applications to meet Home Office requirements (incl drafting application forms, index of documents and letters of representations)
Attending conferences and court
You will have a professional pro-active approach, strong client care skills and be interested in Business Development.
