Background



The Business Education Partnership (UK) Ltd, known as BEP Group is a registered charity, established in 1992.

The charity provides a work experience service and alternative education at our registered independent school for pupils in Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Essex, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.

Currently we employ around 50 part- and full-time staff, across three sites:

Romford (Main admin office and Romford school site) Basildon (School site) and Chelmsford (Work Experience team).

Alternative Education (BEP Academy)



BEP Group first started offering Alternative Education in 1999 and, in the years since, over 3,500 young people have been supported.

BEP Academy became an independent school in 2017 and was judged by Ofsted to be 'Good' in November 2018 and again in February 2023. The school meets all the Independent School Standards, as prescribed by Ofsted and the DfE.

The school (BEP Academy) has two sites, one in Romford (60 students) and the other in Basildon (30 students). We offer GCSEs, entry level and vocational qualifications for children to attend full-time.

Our vision for our school



We are first and foremost a learning community. Disaffected young people often join us as disengaged, hesitant learners in Year 9, 10 and 11. Over time we provide a nurturing environment to allow them to become fully participating members of our school.

Our firm belief, and our experience, is that given the right conditions all young people are capable of extraordinary things. We therefore strive to give disaffected young people the conditions to turn their lives around. We want to create the opportunity for them to see an alternative and set them on the path to success.

Mainly based at our Romford site with 1 to 2 days per week at our Basildon site.

School Management



Be based within the centre and on duty on a daily basis, and be on-call throughout the day Working with our facilities manager, ensure the student communal area is clean and tidy and the building is safe for all users and secured at the end of each day ensure report any health and safety/maintenance issues to management Ensure that class registers are prepared, and all tutors are supplied with their copies. Security checks, including screening of all students, twice daily or as required. Collect and ensure safe storage of mobile phones from students at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions. Line Management of a small team of Inclusions Mentors. Ensure staff and students have a positive impact in the local area/community and address any concerns from local people (complaints must be recorded and dealt with centrally) Agreeing tasks with Head of School and supervising the work of Behaviour Support Inclusion Mentors. Deputise for Head of School at daily morning meeting to ensure all school staff are briefed/de-briefed regarding students and with phone calls to parents at the end of the school day to discuss sanctions, attendance and/or rewards. Conduct re-focus or reintegration meetings with students and parents where necessary. Occasional home visits to ensure non-attending student welfare.

Student behaviour



Supervise the student 'Common Room', outdoor space and corridors throughout school, ensuring: The behaviour policy is applied as required and that children out of class are managed appropriately; Children's behaviour is managed appropriately at key points throughout the day including screening, handing in/collecting phones, break and lunchtimes and they return to lesson promptly at the end of breaks. Respond to requests for assistance from teachers - this involves quickly getting to the classroom or other area where assistance is required (may include intervening and breaking up a fight between students). 'Positive handling' and physical restraint of teenagers once training has been received. Liaise with Head of School and/or senior colleagues regarding student discipline specifically sanctions. Support with patrolling to front of school or attendance at local business premises to help assist with student behaviour. Ensure that the behaviour policy is adhered to at all times. Assist Head of School with conducting re-focus or reintegration meetings with students and parents where necessary.

Safeguarding



Working with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and the DDSLs, to ensure children are safeguarded which may include attending meetings, informing appropriate individuals and complete paperwork and update database as necessary, ensuring confidentiality (may involve some unsocial hours). Be aware of and follow child protection guidance protocols in all aspects of the role. Liaise with SENDCo regarding any special considerations with regards to SEN or LAC students. Be aware of health care plans for students with specific medical requirements and plan for any resulting actions to be taken. As instructed by the Head of School: Maintain contact with and update, where applicable, partner organisations and agencies (e.g. EWOs, Youth Offending Teams etc); Support attendance team with following-up poor attendance and timekeeping with parents and students to keep students motivated and focused and hold meetings where required.

Record keeping and school liaison



Ensure that all interventions with children (including their learning goals, achievements, mentoring sessions, incidents, progression routes etc) are recorded on our central MI system and communicated to a specific named schools and professionals. Ensure that student attendance is recorded accurately and timely on our in-house database system, at morning and afternoon registration and throughout the day is students arrive or leave site.

Person Specification - Essential



Ability to form productive relationships with young people who can be among the more challenging. Physically fit and able to remain mobile throughout the day. Occasional positive handling or restraint of young people (reasonable force) is required (sometimes for up to 30 minutes (generally between 1 and 5 minutes) Ability to deal with people at various levels of seniority. Experience of managing staff and have good team working skills. Experience and training in Safeguarding and Child Protection. Good ICT skills (MS Office including word, excel, and access). Ability to work to deadlines and prioritise in an organised manner. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Full driving license and own/have unrestricted access to and appropriate vehicle (you will have to demonstrate you have business insurance in place, or are willing to put business insurance in place, if offered the role).

Person Specification - Desirable



Leadership experience in school (including head of year, assistant head, pastoral lead etc) Experience of working with young people with SEND. Knowledge and understanding of how and why young people become disaffected Knowledge and practical application of behaviour management strategies

Training
