About the role
The UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) is seeking to appoint an Institute Manager. IIPP is a department within UCL and part of the Bartlett Faculty, known internationally for its radical thinking about space, design and sustainability. The work of the institute is influencing global policy decisions and creating new policy collaborations to deliver public value-driven innovations.
The role of the Institute Manager is pivotal to the Institute's everyday functioning and strategic development. IIPP's ambitious, paradigm shifting mission - to change how public value is imagined, practised and evaluated to tackle societal challenges - requires a strategic thinker and motivated manager. IIPP is looking for an established senior manager with an excellent track record in organisational management in complex and high-paced organisations.
The Institute Manager's responsibilities are broad and strategic, including:

• Strategic Development and Planning: Advising the Director and Deputy Director on strategic objectives, supporting decision-making with relevant data, and helping to develop and implement Institute and UCL strategies. The role involves coordinating the annual budgeting cycle, supporting policy impact programmes, and representing the Institute externally.
• Operational Management and Services: Overseeing the coordination between teaching, research, and policy engagement, ensuring the provision of professional operational services, and regularly reviewing and improving operational structures. The Institute Manager manages space and facilities, ensures compliance with UCL policies, and leads on both planned and ad hoc projects.
• Human Resources / Staff Management: Developing and maintaining the Institute's staffing structure, managing and developing the operational support team, ensuring staff are well managed and motivated, and identifying training and development needs.
• Finance / Resource Management: Setting and monitoring budgets, liaising with funding bodies, managing studentship funds, and ensuring effective stewardship of Institute resources, including finance, staffing, and facilities.
• Teaching and Research Support Services: Ensuring effective support for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, maximising research funds, supporting external funding applications, and overseeing complaints and appeals procedures.
• Other Duties: Promoting good working practices, championing UCL management competences, and undertaking any other duties within the scope of the role as required by Institute leadership. The post holder is also expected to actively follow UCL policies, including those on equality, diversity, and health and safety.

This role is open for secondment for 12 months.
About you
The ideal candidate should be educated to degree level or possess equivalent professional experience. Essential experience includes a strong track record in administration and management within higher education or public policy organisations, as well as proven success in leading and developing support teams, managing change, and overseeing budgetary control. The candidate should also have experience advising on employment issues, business planning, and recruiting and developing staff.
Key skills required include excellent line management and team leadership abilities, strong financial management (including budgeting and reporting), and advanced IT skills. The role demands the ability to multitask, manage competing priorities, and demonstrate effective negotiation and networking skills. Excellent interpersonal skills, diplomacy, discretion, and confidence in communicating with senior staff and external stakeholders are also essential.
