The IT Business Analyst plays a key role in aligning the firm's technology strategy with business objectives. Working closely with stakeholders across all practice areas and business support functions, the IT Business Analyst is responsible for capturing business requirements, analysing processes, and supporting the delivery of technology solutions that improve efficiency, insight, collaboration, and client service.
This role requires a strong understanding of legal business processes, excellent communication skills, and the ability to bridge the gap between technical teams and non-technical users. The IT Business Analyst will work as part of the firm's IT team to ensure new systems, integrations, and process improvements are effectively scoped, implemented, and adopted.
Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, the IT Business Analyst will work with heads of department, IT teams, and other stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of IT services throughout the business.
Working hours: Monday to Friday between the hours of 09:00 - 17:15.
Office Location: Derby head office with onsite support as required at other locations.
Key Responsibilities
Business Analysis & Requirements Gathering
Engage with stakeholders across legal and business departments to understand operational needs and identify opportunities for technology-driven improvement.
Elicit, document, and validate business and functional requirements through interviews, workshops, and process mapping.
Translate business requirements into detailed technical specifications for developers, vendors, or IT project teams.
Maintain a clear audit trail of requirements, decisions, and changes throughout project lifecycles.
Process Improvement
Analyse and document existing workflows, identifying inefficiencies or gaps in systems and processes.
Recommend and support implementation of process improvements using available technologies.
Support the development of business cases and cost-benefit analyses for proposed IT projects.
Project Support & Delivery
Work collaboratively with project managers to ensure business requirements are accurately captured and delivered within scope and budget.
Support user acceptance testing (UAT) by developing test cases, coordinating test activities, and validating results.
Monitor and evaluate post-implementation success, gathering feedback to inform future enhancements.
Assist in the creation of training materials and change management activities including provision of support to drive adoption of new systems.
Provide analytical support across the business as and when required.
Stakeholder Engagement
Act as a liaison between business users, IT teams, and third-party vendors to ensure mutual understanding and effective communication.
Build and maintain strong relationships with partners, fee-earners, and support staff to ensure IT solutions align with business priorities.
Engage with both internal and external stakeholders to present findings and provide solutions.
Communicate project updates, risks, and timelines clearly and professionally.
Data & Systems Insight
Develop an understanding of the firm's core applications, including practice management, document management, CRM, and finance systems.
Assist in data analysis and reporting requirements to support operational and strategic decision-making.
Support data integrity and governance initiatives to ensure accuracy and consistency across systems.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
Proven experience as a Business Analyst, ideally within a law firm or other professional services environment.
Strong understanding of the legal sector's operational processes, including case management, document management, time recording, and client onboarding.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured approach to gathering and documenting requirements.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
Experience supporting system implementations, integrations, or process improvement projects.
Proficient with Microsoft 365 and collaboration tools (Teams, SharePoint, Power BI, etc.).
Great interpersonal skills, possessing the ability to clearly and concisely communicate ideas and proposals
Desirable
Familiarity with key legal technologies such as Partner for Windows, Liberate or similar.
Experience working with software vendors or managing third-party suppliers.
Knowledge of project management or ITIL frameworks.
Experience with data visualisation or business intelligence tools.
