To manage the daily operations of the kennel facility, ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare, staff management, and customer service. The Kennel Manager oversees the care, rehabilitation, and rehoming of rescue dogs, and supports the strategic goals of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Care & Welfare
Ensure all animals receive appropriate care, feeding, exercise, grooming, medical treatment, and socialisation.
Work closely with veterinary professionals and behaviourists to assess and meet individual animal needs.
Implement and monitor welfare protocols and health and safety procedures.
Maintain accurate records of animal health, behaviour, and rehoming progress.
Team Management
Recruit, train, and supervise kennel staff and volunteers.
Create staff rotas to ensure adequate cover across all shifts.
Provide regular performance feedback, support development, and address any staff issues.
Facility Management
Ensure kennels and all areas are clean, safe, and compliant with health and safety standards.
Oversee inventory and ordering of food, bedding, cleaning products, and medical supplies.
Monitor maintenance issues and liaise with contractors as necessary.
Adoption & Rehoming
Assist in the assessment and matching of animals with potential adopters.
Conduct or oversee adoption interviews and home checks.
Support promotional and fundraising events to increase adoptions and awareness.
Administration & Compliance
Maintain records in accordance with DEFRA and local authority requirements.
Produce reports on animal intakes, adoptions, and welfare outcomes.
Ensure compliance with all licensing, animal welfare, and data protection regulations.
Person Specification
Essential
Experience managing or supervising staff in an animal care or kennel environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of canine behaviour and welfare standards.
Strong organisational and time-management skills.
Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
Comfortable with physical work and handling dogs of all sizes.
Desirable
Level 3 qualification in Animal Care or similar (or equivalent experience).
Behavioural experience
Experience with rescue/shelter work or managing rehoming processes.
IT proficiency (Microsoft Office, shelter management software).
Flexibility for emergencies
Additional Information
A full UK driving licence is required.
Role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Enhanced DBS check may be required.
You will need to have the passion and motivation to work within a rescue kennels and the understanding that this is a role like no other.
