The Kitchen Apprentice works under the guidance of the Head Chef/Chef Manager to learn the fundamentals of professional cooking. This role involves assisting with food preparation, maintaining high standards of food safety and cleanliness, and supporting kitchen operations in a fast-paced environment while completing a structured apprenticeship programme.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation
Assist with preparing ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and dinner services, including chopping, peeling, and slicing
Cooking Assistance
Support senior chefs with basic cooking tasks
Assist with plating dishes and assembling menu items according to set specifications
Hygiene & Safety
Maintain a clean and sanitised workspace following a "clean as you go" approach
Wash pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen equipment
Ensure food safety and hygiene standards are followed at all times
Stock Management
Assist with receiving, unpacking, and organising food deliveries
Rotate stock correctly to ensure freshness and reduce waste
Training & Compliance
Actively participate in apprenticeship training
Complete all required assessments and coursework from the training provider
Adhere to Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, and Allergen Control policies at all times
Skills and Qualifications
Passion for Food:
A strong interest in cooking and building a career in the hospitality industry
Work Ethic:
Reliable, punctual, and hardworking, with the ability to perform well in a fast-paced kitchen
Teamwork & Communication:
Able to communicate clearly and work effectively with others
Physical Fitness:
Able to stand for long periods and lift, push, or pull as required in a kitchen environment
Education:
Basic literacy and numeracy required; GCSEs or prior culinary education are an advantage but not essential
