Job Purpose
The Cook is responsible for the smooth daily operation of the Hub Kitchen and staff kitchen areas, providing nutritious and appealing meals for Beacon members, staff, and visitors. This role ensures high standards of food hygiene, safety, and customer service, contributing to the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of the Safeharbour community facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, prepare, and serve nutritious hot meals, snacks, and beverages daily.
Independently manage kitchen operations during shifts, ensuring service continuity.
Assist with food preparation and support other cook during busy periods or staff absences.
Oversee the staff kitchen and ensure it is well-stocked, clean, and functional.
Conduct daily opening and closing procedures, including setup, equipment checks, and cleaning.
Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness, food safety, and hygiene in all kitchen areas.
Follow all relevant health and safety regulations and ensure compliance with The Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidelines.
Record temperature checks and cleaning schedules in line with operational policies.
Provide friendly, efficient, and respectful service to the Beacon members, staff, and visitors.
Take orders and process payments accurately using the iPad and SUM machine.
Support special events, group activities, and community catering needs as required.
Monitor stock levels, prepare order lists, and communicate requirements to the line leader for approval.
Ensure all deliveries are checked, stored correctly, and rotated according to FIFO (First-In, First-Out) principles.
Coordinate, train and guide volunteers assisting in the kitchen, ensuring clear communication and safe working practices.
Collaborate with colleagues and management to improve menus, workflows, and overall service quality.
Required Skills
Strong knowledge of food preparation, cooking techniques, and portion control.
Excellent understanding of food hygiene and safety standards
Ability to plan menus and adapt recipes to dietary needs and preferences.
Skilled in operating and maintaining kitchen equipment safely and efficiently.
Strong organisational and time management abilities.
Ability to multitask and work calmly under pressure during busy service times.
Good teamwork and communication skills for coordinating with staff and volunteers.
Basic IT literacy for managing orders, payments, and communication systems.
Customer service orientation and a positive attitude towards community service.
Additional Duties
Participate in team meetings and mandatory training sessions.
Perform other reasonable tasks as directed by the Office Manager.
Uniform
Black shirt, black trousers, and closed-toe shoes must be worn during all shifts.
Person Specification
Previous catering or kitchen experience.
Knowledge of food hygiene and safety regulations (Level 2 or higher preferred).
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Good communication and customer service skills.
Flexibility and reliability.
Experience working in community or care settings.
Experience supervising volunteers or junior staff.
