Job Description

We are looking for a passionate, enthusiastic Kitchen Manager to join our friendly, thriving primary school!

This term-time role (7:30am-2:00pm, Monday to Friday, for 39 term time weeks per year) offers a great work/life balance and the opportunity to lead our daily on-site catering service -- from breakfast club through to lunch -- delivering healthy, nutritious meals to our children.

You'll bring energy, creativity, and a love of food whilst continuing to develop our meal offerings and expand our catering service to provide food to support some of our daytime and evening school events.

Responsible for cooking and ordering as well as all hygiene,health and safety requirements, this would be a great role for an existing chef who is looking for greater flexibility during the evenings and the Christmas, Easter and summer holiday periods.

Main Purpose of Job:



To be responsible for the overall management and operation of the school catering service, ensuring a high quality and professional service is provided to pupils and staff. To develop and promote the use of the catering service to support the school in community events and functions and ensure the effectiveness of the school kitchen.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To ensure systems and working practices are established that ensure the efficient and economic use is made of all resources and the highest standards of hygiene and food safety are maintained in relation to the preparation, cooking and serving of food. To plan, operate and control the production and service of food related duties, in conjunction with catering partners as appropriate and to prepare, cook and serve food and beverages as directed by the Headteacher/School Business Manager. To devise menus, in conjunction with catering partners as appropriate, to ensure a variety of healthy and tasty meals are served in the school which cater for different dietary requirements as appropriate and meet healthy school food guidelines. To take overall responsibility for the standard of cleanliness, safety and hygiene of the premises and equipment in relation to Health and Safety and Hygiene Regulations and ensure the successful communication of associated working policies and practices in relation to health and safety and hygiene for all catering staff and staff working with food in school. To supervise the work of catering staff on a daily basis and to ensure all catering staff receive the relevant food safety and hygiene training and hold up-to-date basic food hygiene certificates and work in accordance with best practice at all times. To order all food goods and other commodities required from the recognised suppliers in accordance with the catering requirements of the school, guidance of any catering partners and to the agreed school catering budget. To ensure appropriate procedures are in place with regards to stock management, to ensure the correct operation and control of food stocks, to include maintaining stock records and ensuring the correct completion and submission of all appropriate returns and records. To prepare, cook and serve food and beverages as needed, including breakfast and lunch service, expected termly evening events and fundraising activities as necessary. To work to support the development and expansion of the catering function in line with the strategic objectives of the school, marketing and promoting the schools' catering services to school users so as to ensure best use of the facilities and maximise the opportunity for income generation. To ensure the correct financial and accounting procedures are adhered to by all catering staff with regard to receipt of orders, deliveries, invoicing and payments for food and drinks from students and visitors to the School. To arrange for appropriate invoices to be made in respect of catering functions and services made available to users of the School's premises and facilities. To work with the Business Manager to effectively manage the school's catering budgets, including staffing budgets, equipment, provisions and all other overheads and to participate in the selection, appointment and induction of new catering staff as necessary. To develop, organise, control and assist with School catering functions at the direction of the Business Manager/Headteacher. To arrange for appropriate invoices to be made in respect of catering functions and services made available to users of the School's premises and facilities. To work effectively with the catering assistant to ensure that the dining area is appropriately set up and prepared for regular breakfast and lunch services including moving and setting up tables, trolleys etc and liaising with other school staff around events as appropriate and to assist with and oversee cleaning up the dining areas, kitchen and catering equipment after the lunch periods, including cleaning and putting away tables, washing up/loading dishwashers, cleaning kitchen surfaces and kitchen equipment as required. To support children's learning behaviour through consistent modelling of manners and dining etiquette, for example, thanking children for waiting in the queue or for clearing their plates independently. To be aware of and adhere to applicable rules, regulations, legislation and procedures e.g. Council (Equal Opportunities Policy/Code of Conduct) and national legislation (Health and Safety, Data Protection). To maintain confidentiality of information acquired in the course of undertaking duties for the School and be responsible for your own continuing self-development, undertaking training as appropriate. To undertake other duties appropriate to the grading of the post as required.
