The Lab Technician is a key role providing analysis and results to our clients via our veterinary and nursing teams. The role is based in Malmesbury within The George Veterinary Hospital but works closely with all four practices covering both small and large animals.
This role requires an organised individual who can follow process and who also has an eye for detail. You will meet the demands of a busy veterinary group, often working alone, but be confident to communicate and report back both clearly and accurately
on specific remits or investigative cases.
This is a part-time role covering mornings which requires a minimum of 20 hours per week, Monday through to Friday. Flexibility to cover other areas of the practice may also be requested from time to time, and there may on occasion be opportunities for additional hours.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Analysis and assimilation of findings
Attention to detail
Competent IT skills. Familiarity with Word and Excel an advantage.
Good numeracy skills
Good organisational ability and ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (full training provided):
Perform/operate blood tests on automatic blood analyser (Electrolytes, Biochemistry and Haematology machines)
Perform Microscopy of skin and hair samples; identification of parasites etc.
Bacteriology - including plate milk samples onto agar plates & reading results
Faecal analysis to check for worm eggs, Cocci & salmonella
Quality control on all machines in the laboratory
Ordering all lab consumables including Agar plates, biochemistry slides, tubes, pipettes, chemical reagents and Assay test kits.
Reporting laboratory results to the case veterinary surgeon and recording on the patient's clinical file
Daily cleaning of the laboratory, including work surfaces and sinks
Monthly deep cleaning of the laboratory including fridges, defrosting freezer and cleaning cupboards and equipment
Liaising with Line Manager to uphold high standards of Health and Safety and maintenance of the laboratory and equipment
