Sense Education is seeking a compassionate and proactive Learning and Behaviour Mentor to work in a primary school in Leeds, supporting young children with additional needs who may display challenging behaviours. In this rewarding role, you'll assist children in managing their behaviour, teaching coping strategies, and encouraging communication skills using tools like PECS and Makaton. You'll play a vital role in fostering independence and supporting their developmental milestones. Some personal care duties may be required.

Summary



The Learning and Behaviour Mentor will work closely with teaching staff, SENCOs and other support professionals to support children who need extra help with behaviour, communication, and self?regulation. This role is in Leeds and involves delivering high?quality, personalised support in an inclusive primary school environment.

The Role



As Learning and Behaviour Mentor, you will help children manage challenging behaviour, modelling and teaching coping strategies. You will use PECS, Makaton, or similar communication tools to support pupils whose needs include communication difficulties. You will encourage pupils to develop independence in tasks, routines, and social interaction. You may provide personal care as needed, while always treating children with dignity and respect. You will monitor, record and report on pupils' progress, working with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or equivalent.

The Ideal Person and Skills/Education Needed



Experience in behaviour management in primary or care settings. Some familiarity with PECS and/or Makaton; willingness to learn or receive training if needed. Patient, nurturing, empathetic, with a strong belief that behaviour communicates need. Good communication skills and ability to collaborate with teachers, SENCO, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Record?keeping skills: able to monitor progress and maintain accurate documentation.

Hours and Start Date



Hours: 8:30?AM - 3:30?PM, Monday to Friday. Open to both full?time and part?time applications. Immediate start available.

If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
