Summary
Sense Education is seeking a compassionate and proactive Learning and Behaviour Mentor to work in a specialist primary school for children with complex SEND. This is a rewarding role supporting pupils who may display behaviours that challenge and require consistent emotional, communication, and behavioural support throughout the school day.
What You'll Be Doing as a Learning and Behaviour Mentor
As a Learning and Behaviour Mentor, you'll support young learners with additional needs across a range of activities and routines. Your role will involve:
Working 1:1 or in small groups to support pupils with emotional regulation, behaviour management, and engagement
Using PECS, Makaton, and other communication strategies to encourage understanding and expression
Teaching and modelling coping strategies to help pupils manage anxiety, frustration, and transitions
Supporting personal care routines when required with dignity and sensitivity
Maintaining consistency with behaviour support plans and working closely with class teachers and therapists
What Makes a Great Learning and Behaviour Mentor
This Learning and Behaviour Mentor role would suit someone with a background in care, youth work, health, or education, and a genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs. We're looking for:
Experience working with children or young people with SEND or SEMH, ideally in a specialist setting
Confidence in using or learning alternative communication methods like PECS and Makaton
A patient, calm, and emotionally resilient approach to support
Teamwork and adaptability in a dynamic, needs-led environment
A proactive attitude towards monitoring progress and celebrating small milestones

Hours and Start Date
Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Open to both full and part-time applicants

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
