This full-time role is available as soon as possible or from January 2026. It involves working 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday from 8.30am - 4.30pm with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break, during term-time plus 3 additional weeks during school holidays.
The Librarian will be expected to play a full role in the oversight and management of the Alan Cooper Library and staff including a full-time Assistant Librarian and part-time Library Assistant.
They will develop, maintain and promote a high quality, professional library service for all students and staff in order to aid teaching and learning and promote reading for pleasure.
The precise delineation of responsibilities will inevitably develop over time and will need to be flexible, but will include:
Manage the selection, acquisition, organisation, promotion, maintenance and exploitation of all Library resources to cover the full age and ability range of the Senior School community.
Take responsibility for and manage the Library budget including the preparation of budget bids and estimates.
Prepare an Annual Report for the school' Senior Management Team.
Ensure that the relevant Library policies and procedures are in place.
Take the lead role in the administration and maintenance of Heritage, the Library Management System and to ensure the systematic indexing, classification and cataloguing of all library resources to facilitate effective retrieval.
Maintain a safe, stimulating and inclusive library environment conducive to achieving optimum use both for purposeful study and leisure, including supervising pupils' use of the Library.
Through a structured Information Skills programme provide guidance and assistance to students on:appropriate strategies for the selection of information resources to undertake research both from within the school and the wider community; the effective use of specific sources, e.g. subscription databases; the choice of literature and materials to meet curricular and leisure needs.
Collaborate with teaching staff in planning and supporting reader development, in order to encourage reading and enjoyment of literature.
Supervise and manage Library staff, undertaking staff appraisals and participating in the recruitment and training of new staff.
Develop and maintain links with other libraries and relevant organisations.
Exploit opportunities for professional development and maintain a comprehensive awareness of current developments in information and library management, education and children's literature.
Be aware of and act upon relevant school policies and in particular those associated with Child Protection/Safeguarding Children and Health and Safety issues.
Overall responsibility for the School Archives formulating the relevant policies and working with relevant staff dealing with enquiries from all members of the school community and outside researchers.
Any other duties which may reasonably be regarded as within the nature of the duties and responsibilities/grade of the post as defined and assigned by the Principal or a member of the Senior Management Team.
