in the Central Region is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of innovative and compliant lighting solutions for a variety of projects, ranging from public highways and infrastructure to commercial and industrial buildings. The role requires a blend of technical engineering expertise and design sensibility.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
Lighting Design & Calculation:
Producing detailed internal and external lighting designs and layouts using specialist software such as DIALux, Relux, and AutoCAD.
Documentation:
Preparing and maintaining comprehensive design documentation, including technical drawings, specifications, luminaire schedules, and bills of quantities.
Compliance & Standards:
Ensuring all designs meet relevant national and European standards, guidelines, legislation, and energy efficiency targets (e.g., DMRB for highways projects).
Collaboration:
Working closely with clients, architects, sales teams, contractors, and multi-disciplinary design teams (e.g., mechanical and electrical engineers) to ensure project coordination and client requirements are met.
Project Management:
Assisting in planning, organising, and overseeing projects from concept to completion, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
Site Visits & Surveys:
Conducting on-site surveys and assessments to determine existing conditions, provide technical advice, and ensure designs are buildable and meet project requirements.
Problem Solving & Technical Support:
Analysing engineering problems, developing innovative solutions, and providing technical guidance and support to internal teams and customers.
Mentorship:
Contributing to the development and training of junior staff members and technicians.
Key Skills and Qualifications
Technical Knowledge:
A strong understanding of electrical design principles, lighting control systems (DALI, DMX, etc.), and lighting maintenance operations.
Software Proficiency:
Competency in using lighting design and CAD software (Relux, DIALux, AutoCAD).
Qualifications:
A qualification in an electrical or building services discipline is often preferred. Membership and registration with a professional body like the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP) or the Engineering Council is also highly valued, with the ILP Exterior Lighting Diploma a common requirement for highway roles.
Soft Skills:
Excellent communication, time management, collaboration, and organisational skills are essential for managing projects and working within a team.
Driving Licence:
A full UK driving licence is often required for site visits.
Work Environment
The role typically involves a mix of office-based design work and on-site visits for surveys, client meetings, and project commissioning. Many roles now offer hybrid working policies, allowing a split between office/site and remote work
