Job Summary



We are a small London workshop; restoring, wiring and fabricating lighting. We provide a bespoke service for artists, interior designers and antique dealers.

The work is not repetitive, the items worked on are unique and valuable.

The successful candidate must be a creative problem solver; skillful, observant, methodical, logical, careful and highly adaptable in their approach. It is not suitable for somebody looking to do a mindless job. You must relish a challenge and ensure all work undertaken is based on an informed understanding of materials and techniques in order to ensure the best possible outcome.

This role requires a blend of artistic sensibility and technical expertise, as you will be working with various materials and techniques to restore vintage and contemporary luminaires.

Responsibilities



Given projects to work on from start to finish for which you will be responsible for. Document the restoration process and maintain records of materials used for each project. Assess the condition of lighting fixtures and determine the appropriate restoration techniques required. Clean, adapt, repair and rewire various types of lighting fixtures, including chandeliers, sconces, and lamps. Fabricate lighting to exact specifications to the highest possible standard. Ensure lighting safety standards are met and regulations adhered to without exception. Maintain an organised workspace and adhere to health and safety regulations. Stay updated on industry trends and new restoration techniques to continually enhance skills.

Requirements



Proven experience in lighting restoration or a related field is highly desirable. As this is a niche profession, training will be given in all areas. I am looking for candidates with transferable skills. Experience in metalwork: Lathe, bandsaw, silver soldering, soft soldering, metal shaping, cutting and polishing. We work with a long list of different materials but mainly fabricate in brass. Please give a clear indication of your experience level on each of the above list within your application. Include photos of your relevant projects. Solid level of experience using workshop hand tools is a prerequisite. Please expand on your relevant skill level and experience. Examples of transferable experience include but are not limited to: furniture making, set building, cabinet making, prop making, engineering, sculpture, artist's assistant, studio/workshop technician. Strong attention to detail with an eye for aesthetics and design. Working memory needed to ensure the accurate disassembly and reassembly of luminaires while also ensuring improvements are made and problems are dealt with. Ability to understand and retain both visual and verbal detailed instructions. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Excellent communication skills. Familiarity with electrical systems related to lighting fixtures and decorative finishes is advantageous. Good manual dexterity and the ability to handle delicate, fiddly components. On rare occasions you will be required to make site visits where you will be client facing or clients attend the workshop. It is important you show up professional and presentable at all times. A genuine passion for historical preservation and craftsmanship.
Salary based on relevant experience. Ideally a 4 day week or full time.
