We are now seeking an experienced and commercially astute Assistant Management Accountant to support the firm's financial planning, reporting, and decision-making. This role is key to ensuring accurate financial management, driving efficiency, and supporting strategic growth.
Key Responsibilities
As an Assistant Management Accountant you'll deal with a variety of elements and tasks such as:
Prepare monthly and quarterly management accounts
Track financial performance vs budgets and forecasts
Deliver clear and concise reporting for the management team
Identify variances and provide commentary with actionable insights
Support preparation of annual budgets and cash flow forecasts
Develop rolling forecasts to support business planning
Assist department heads in understanding their financial performance
Monitor day-to-day cash flow
Liaise with the legal cashier to ensure smooth financial operations
Track debtor days, WIP, and client account balances
Analyse overheads and departmental spending
Make recommendations for improving profitability and efficiency
Conduct lawyer-level cost vs billing analysis: Calculate true cost of each fee-earner (salary, NI, pensions, software, training, etc.); Compare against individual billing and contribution to profit; Highlight breakeven points and underperformance risks
Ensure financial compliance with SRA Accounts Rules (liaising with the legal cashier as needed)
Prepare for external audits and support the auditors where necessary
Help maintain appropriate financial policies and controls
Maintain accurate records using Xero and CMS
Create automated reports and dashboards to support leadership
Identify opportunities to improve systems, processes, and reporting
About You
The ideal candidate will have:
Qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACCA / CIMA / ACA or equivalent)
Experience in professional services (legal or similar industry preferred)
Strong knowledge of financial systems - Xero, Excel
Analytical mindset with excellent attention to detail
Proactive, commercially aware, and solution-focused
Ability to communicate effectively with both finance and non-finance stakeholders
