Job Description

The Materials Testing Technician (Asphalt) is responsible for carrying out laboratory and site-based testing of asphalt and related construction materials in accordance with relevant industry standards and client specifications. The role ensures that all test results are accurate, reliable, and delivered in a timely manner to support quality control, compliance, and construction performance monitoring.

Key Responsibilities:



Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests on asphalt, bituminous mixtures, aggregates, and related materials in accordance with BS EN, ASTM, or other relevant standards. Conduct on-site sampling, coring, and compaction testing of asphalt materials. Prepare test specimens and maintain accurate sample identification and traceability. Record, analyze, and report test data accurately and promptly using approved reporting systems. Calibrate and maintain testing equipment in accordance with quality procedures. Comply with company health, safety, and environmental policies at all times. Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and compliance with UKAS/ISO 17025 quality systems. Assist with training of junior technicians and participate in internal audits when required. Liaise with clients, contractors, and colleagues professionally to ensure effective communication of test results and requirements.

Skills & Competencies:



Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate results. Practical, hands-on aptitude with laboratory and field equipment. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong time management and organizational skills. Understanding of quality management systems (ISO 17025 desirable).

Qualifications & Experience:



Essential:



GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science. Experience in materials testing (ideally asphalt, aggregates, or bitumen). Full UK driving licence.

Desirable:



NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Construction Materials Testing or equivalent. Knowledge of relevant British/European Standards (BS EN 12697 series). Experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory. CSCS card and/or site safety training.

Physical & Working Conditions:



Laboratory and field-based role, requiring manual handling and occasional work in outdoor environments. May involve flexible working hours, including early starts, evenings, or weekends depending on project needs.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):



Accuracy and reliability of test results. Adherence to test turnaround times. Compliance with quality, safety, and environmental standards. Positive feedback from clients and project teams.

Pay: 37,000.00-48,000.00 per year
