The Role

As a Mechanical Technician you\'ll have a role that is out of the ordinary, working as part of an exclusive team on the remote island MoD base in St Kilda and will be responsible for planned maintenance and a number of other operational support needed to keep this micro environment thriving.

Day-to-day, you\'ll be managing your planned maintenance responsibilities which will be predominately working with the generators as well as any other operational needs. Because the Island is remote you will receive a wide variety of training including advanced first aid, specialist vehicle driving and repairs, even helicopter work. Below are some other duties:

  • Providing planned and reactive maintenance to support the Ecosystem of the Island and helping local search and rescue and coast guard if they need support.
  • Support with Mechanical maintenance for diesel generators, oiled fire Boilers as well as planned work
  • Vehicle maintenance/repair as well as driving an Excavator and training on a number of different vehicles and repairs needed to keep the fleet active
  • Being able to support on whatever tasks are needed as a Mechanical Technician and engineer and work out of your comfort zone and think on your feet
Essential experience of the Mechanical Technician:
  • Experience with facilities engineering and maintenance working on a variety of different equipment areas
  • Happy working to a four week on four week off shift pattern and supporting small team you are on site with
  • Experience working with generators and repairs needed to keep them running, diesel is preferable
Qualifications for the Mechanical Technician:
  • Engineering / Technical qualification: Apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 Mechanical or equivalent
  • Good knowledge and level of competency in other areas of building services
  • HNC/ HND OR NVC level 3 OR Time Served within Mechanical Technician based work
  • Willingness to learn and be trained in a variety of areas and be based in a remote location
