Diamond Light Source is the UK\xe2\x80\x99s national synchrotron; a large scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet lights. Our scientists use the lights to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering technology and cutting-edge materials.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Mechanical Beamline Technician to work at the forefront of our work by supporting scientific research on our beamlines (our research stations).

You will be working across our Structures and Surfaces Group, which includes four beamlines and several laboratories dedicated to the studies of the detailed atomic structures, chemical properties, and electronic behaviours of materials. This role will focus on Beamline I09, which delivers x-rays and fully equipped ultrahigh vacuum end stations containing an extensive suite of instrumentation.

Your role will be to support scientists and technical support groups during maintenance, commissioning, and operations.

Your key duties will include:

  • Installing, maintaining, and upgrading of bespoke, prototype and high-tech equipment such as optical components, ultrahigh vacuum equipment, detectors, diffractometer and goniometer, and sample environment equipment.
  • Working with beamline scientists and engineers in developing new equipment.
  • Helping users set up their experiments on the beamlines.
  • Carrying out regular inspection of installed equipment to comply with safety regulations.
The role will require a willingness to work flexibly at periods of intense activities and to occasionally travel when required.

About You

You will need technical experience either via an ONC/GNVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) or equivalent work experience or an apprenticeship.

You should have machining skills (e.g.manual milling and turning), good planning and time management skills, and the ability to maintain a clean and tidy working environment that meets the operational needs of the beamline.

You will have experience of working in a safe manner and ensuring that equipment is integrated and installed to a high standard.

You should have knowledge, or a willingness to learn about ultrahigh vacuum techniques including vacuum pumps, gauges, and sample manipulation and be able to carry out a variety of intricate mechanical and electrical assembly tasks.
