Location: This is a hybrid role with the majority of the week spent working from home and the expectation to be in the office a minimum of one day per week
Contract: Permanent, full time role
Salary: 38,000 to 40,000 per annum depending on experience

Charity People is delighted to be partnering with Dementia UK, the UK's only specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family, working towards a day when no one has to face dementia alone. The organisation's specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing advice and support, to anyone affected by dementia, whenever it is needed.
A true life-line for many, the charity places warmth, empathy and care at the core of the work it does. Admiral Nurses have time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems. As dementia specialists working across all forms of the disease, including Alzheimer's, they help families manage complex needs, considering the person living with dementia and the people around them to ensure those who are struggling can take back control.
The Media and PR Manager will be joining a small, welcoming team in a friendly and flexible charity. Working closely with colleagues within the Media and Press team you will undertake a range of responsibilities including:

  • Leading on proactive media relations, identifying stories from around the charity to work into press releases or individual pitches for specific key media outlets, as well as fostering warm relationships with key journalists.
  • Respond quickly to reactive media enquiries, identifying appropriate spokespeople where necessary, drafting and providing statements in line with Dementia UK's vision and core values.
  • Support the brand awareness raising activity of the communications team through development of coordinated PR plans and activity including the organisation's annual fundraising initiatives, campaigning work and new services.
  • Work with the Senior Management Team to write authoritative thought leadership pitches, and articles on dementia care for national and trade press.
  • Work with the Content Manager to find families affected by dementia to create supporter stories and blogs that can be used for media work.
  • Stay on top of the latest trends/developments within dementia care in the news to incorporate within articles and media pitches.
  • Assist the Communications Lead and Media and PR Executive on research and administration to support the Ambassador and Celebrity Support programme including managing the relationships with celebrity ambassadors.
  • Advise the Senior Management Team, colleagues and nurses on media best practice and messaging; and accompany nurses, family carers and celebrity ambassadors to media opportunities.
We're looking for a talented press and media professional, either working currently within a similar role within the charity sector, commercial sector, or for an agency; or for someone with journalism experience who is keen to explore working within a media and PR function. In terms of wider experience, and skills, we'd love to hear from people with the following:
  • Excellent knowledge of all areas of media in both traditional and digital environments and of writing across a broad spectrum of formats
  • Understanding of national, regional, broadcast, online and trade PR
  • Experience of proactively sourcing, devising, writing and pitching media stories, resulting in quality coverage
  • Experience of responding to media enquiries and stories at short notice; exercising good judgement
  • Experience of liaising with key stakeholders at every level of an organisation
  • Experience of digesting complicated ideas or clinical information and turning it into clear, simple, compelling copy
  • Knowledge of digital requirements and understanding of different online communication methods
