Mixed Veterinary Surgeon

Penrith, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Overview

The practice has been established for nearly 120 years. We are based in the market town of Penrith, just 6 miles from Lake Ullswater and with easy motorway access north and south to 5 international airports.

Interest and enthusiasm in general practice are essential as there is potential for involvement with anything from herd health and preventive medicine to internal medicine and surgery. The desire to pursue professional development and postgraduate qualifications is fully supported and funded.

We are a proudly independent, RCVS Accredited, mixed practice. The role is uniquely farm biased, best suited to a veterinary surgeon with a minimum of 3+ years of clinical experience.

Full-time vets work a four-day week, with an equal share of on-call duties. Two vets are always on call for support.

Our focus is preventive health in both herd and flock health. Our farm clientele are generally progressive and are all within a compact catchment area (most are within a 10-mile radius).

The role is a mix of approximately 90% farm animal (very little equine) and 10% small animal (mainly on call and weekends, or when the SA vet is off). There is scope to get more involved in the SA side of the business, to try and grow this, as the dynamics of mixed practice is evolving with the changing economy. Practice turnover is 70:30 LA:SA (was 80:20 when I started here 25 years ago).

You are given true clinical freedom and encouraged to follow your chosen clinical interests. Career progression is encouraged. Ideally, I would be looking for someone with vision and enthusiasm to come into the business to hopefully make it their own.

We have all the mod cons including ultrasound, digital x-ray and bull breeding soundness equipment.

We offer a competitive salary dependent on experience, along with:

A 4-day working week, including one long weekend off in 5 (Fri-Mon inclusive).

2-in-5 out of hours rota, with weekend on call duties being shared between the two vets on call. Although this seems a lot, the on-call is never very busy (apart from the obvious lambing time) This will be changing this year to making it a 1 in 5

TB testing is routine and is shared equally. A qualified ATT will be taking the bulk of the load.

The team primarily works across The Eden Valley, and the client base includes a diverse mix of dairy, beef and sheep farmers. The surrounding area is perfect for those with a passion for the outdoors from fell running to water sports or just a gentle stroll and a tasty pub lunch.

The Package includes RCVS and VDS membership, paid CPD tailored to your interests with a generous budget, mobile phone and a fully equipped work vehicle.

We have excellent transport links both North and South with easy access to Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh (by car or train).

Responsibilities

Conduct thorough examinations of animals to assess their health and diagnose any medical conditions. Perform surgical procedures, including routine spays, neuters, and emergency surgeries. Develop and implement treatment plans tailored to each animal's needs. Maintain accurate medical records and documentation for all patients. Communicate effectively with pet owners regarding their animals' health, treatment options, and preventative care.
