qualified OFTEC Heating Engineer

or a strong background in

Groundworks

.

The successful candidate will be expected to

actively work across all three of these key service areas

(OFTEC Heating Engineering & Tank Fitting, Commercial & Domestic Tank Operations, and Groundworks) for our diverse portfolio of commercial and domestic clients. This role demands someone who is

Key Responsibilities



The successful candidate will be an integral part of our team, working across various projects. Responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

Commercial & Domestic Tank Operations (Confined Space Focus):

Leading or assisting with confined space entries into fuel and oil storage tanks

for internal inspections, maintenance, and comprehensive cleaning (including sludge removal and decontamination).

Operating full breathing apparatus (BA) as standard

during confined space entry operations. Performing internal and external visual inspections of both commercial and domestic fuel/oil storage tanks (e.g., assisting EEMUA 159 visual assessments, NDT technicians). Planning and executing the safe decommissioning and removal of redundant storage tanks (both commercial and domestic).

OFTEC Heating Engineering & Tank Fitting:

Installation, commissioning, servicing, and fault-finding of oil-fired heating systems (boilers, ranges, warm air units) for domestic and commercial clients. Carrying out OFTEC inspections and issuing relevant certificates.

Installation and fitting of domestic and commercial oil storage tanks

, including connecting oil supply lines to tanks and appliances. Diagnosing and repairing heating system faults to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Groundworks & Site Services:

Preparing sites for new tank installations, including excavation, levelling, and compaction for tank bases and bunds.. Undertaking trenching for pipework and utility connections, ensuring safe identification and avoidance of buried services. Operating various plant machinery relevant to groundworks (e.g., excavators, dumpers, telehandlers - if certified).

General Responsibilities (Applicable to all duties):

Maintaining the company yard in a clean, organised, and safe manner. Loading and unloading vehicles, and safely moving materials around the yard. Strictly adhering to all company health, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, and relevant legislation. Participating actively in risk assessments, method statements, and toolbox talks. Maintaining accurate records of work performed and submitting clear reports. Ensuring company vehicles, tools, and equipment are maintained to a high standard. Providing excellent customer service and representing Border Tank Services Limited professionally. Willingness to travel extensively, including potential overnight stays.

Skills & Qualifications (Essential)



Proven experience in AT LEAST ONE of the following core areas:

Proven, hands-on experience in confined space entry within a commercial or industrial setting

.

Current certifications for Confined Space Entry (High Risk) and Breathing Apparatus (BA) are essential

.

OFTEC Qualified:

Current OFTEC registration (e.g., OFT10-101, 10-105E, 600A) and significant experience with oil-fired appliances and tank fitting.

Groundworks:

Minimum of 3 years' experience in groundworks, with relevant plant operator tickets. Full UK Driving Licence (clean preferred).

A strong aptitude and genuine willingness to be trained and work across the remaining service areas

(e.g., if your primary background is OFTEC/Confined Space, you'll be trained in Groundworks, and vice-versa). Ability to work independently, make sound decisions, and proactively

when faced with challenges. Strong understanding and commitment to Health, Safety, and Environmental best practices. Ability to work safely and effectively in various environments, including outdoors, at height, and in confined spaces. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for client interaction and reporting.

Skills & Qualifications (Desirable)



Previous experience as an OFTEC Heating Engineer and/or with tank fitting (if primary background is Groundworks). Previous experience in groundworks or operating plant machinery (e.g., Telehandler, Excavator, Dumper) with relevant tickets (if primary background is OFTEC). ADR Licence and experience operating vacuum tankers. Experience with Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques or UT thickness gauging. CSCS Card, First Aid, Manual Handling certifications. SMSTS/SSSTS or other site management qualifications. Understanding of EEMUA 159/API 653 principles or UK Oil Storage Regulations.

Working Conditions



The role involves regular travel across Scotland and Northern England, with potential for overnight stays and working away from home. Work is often performed outdoors in various weather conditions.
