The Operations Manager will oversee the daily management of HGV instructors and coordinate the weekly training schedules (planner) to ensure efficient delivery of high-quality HGV training programmes. The role requires a strong understanding of DVSA standards and compliance, safeguarding responsibilities, and the ability to lead, support, and develop instructors to achieve learner success and company objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructor & Team Management:
Lead and manage a team of HGV instructors, ensuring high standards of training and learner experience.
Carry out regular performance reviews, observations, and CPD planning for instructors.
Provide coaching, mentoring, and support to instructors, fostering a positive and professional working culture.
Apply safer recruitment practices when recruiting and managing instructors in line with company safeguarding policies.
Training Scheduling & Planning:
Create and maintain the weekly training schedule (planner), allocating instructors, vehicles, and sites efficiently.
Respond quickly to changes in learner numbers, cancellations, or instructor availability.
Ensure schedules maximise resource utilisation while maintaining compliance with DVSA requirements.
Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values:
Promote and uphold safeguarding practices across all operations, ensuring learners and staff are safe.
Ensure Prevent Duty and British Values are embedded within training operations and instructor conduct.
Act as a point of escalation for safeguarding concerns and report to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
DVSA Compliance & Quality:
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of DVSA rules, regulations, and test requirements.
Ensure all training delivery is in line with DVSA standards and internal policies.
Work with compliance and quality teams to ensure readiness for DVSA and Ofsted/DfE audits.
Operational Delivery:
Oversee the smooth day-to-day running of HGV training operations.
Liaise with administrators and compliance staff to align scheduling with learner journeys.
Support the allocation and maintenance of training vehicles, sites, and equipment.
Reporting and Communication:
Provide regular reports to the General Manager, on instructor performance, utilisation, and learner outcomes.
Act as the main point of contact between instructors and management.
Ensure clear communication of schedules, operational updates, and compliance requirements.
Person Specification:
Essential:
Proven experience in managing teams and operational planning.
Strong organisational and scheduling skills, with ability to prioritise and adapt under pressure.
Understanding of DVSA requirements, HGV licensing pathways, and driver training standards. Knowledge of safeguarding, Prevent Duty, British Values, and safer recruitment.
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
IT proficiency (scheduling systems, Salesforce, Google Workspace).
Full UK car licence
Desirable:
Experience in HGV training, transport, or logistics sector.
Knowledge of Ofsted/DfE funded training requirements.
Current HGV licence (Category C or CE).
