Shortbread House is a family-run bakery based in the heart of Edinburgh. We produce a range of luxury shortbread for online, retail, and catering markets across the UK and internationally. The

Packing Area Supervisor

is responsible for overseeing the packing, quality control, and warehousing of our products, in line with company values and production targets. The core objective of the role is to supervise a team of 15-25 people, ensuring all team members perform their duties to the highest standards of food safety and product quality.

This role involves the day-to-day supervision of packing operations to ensure team and company objectives are met. The successful candidate will communicate clearly, motivate and support the team, and work closely with management to maintain efficient and effective operations. A helpful nature, strong leadership skills, and a can-do attitude are essential.

The role is 39 hours per week, typically Monday to Friday, however, during our busy periods some weekend work and overtime is required.

Duties and responsibilities

include, but are not limited to:

Ensure the packing team consistently follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and maintains a clean, tidy, and hygienic working environment at all times. Ensure total accuracy and compliance in all aspects of packaging, coding, and labelling processes. Carry out all work in accordance with company standards and established health and safety procedures. Maintain a thorough understanding of the production workflow, from production through the packing machines to the despatch area. Operate packing equipment competently and identify, troubleshoot, and resolve routine issues within the packing area. Complete all process control documentation accurately, thoroughly, and within the required timelines. Train, guide and supervise the packing team in their various jobs in a way that promotes teamwork, safety, quality and productivity. Manage resources effectively, including stock control and product traceability systems. Apply critical thinking and logic to plan daily packing activities efficiently and propose improvements to enhance packing performance and output. Support the training and onboarding of new employees and contribute to the ongoing development, performance review, and continuous improvement of the packing team. Use strong interpersonal skills and an understanding of individual needs to motivate, engage, and support team members. Support the Production Manager in managing staff, operations, and projects, ensuring concerns are resolved and areas for improvement are effectively monitored.
This position requires a person with experience and/or abilities in the following areas:

Supervision in a fast-paced working environment Computer skills Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills Ability to motivate both self and others. Knowledge of food processing standards, BRC and hygiene regulations. High levels of adaptability and flexibility Good working knowledge of packing machinery Ability to manage resources efficiently Understanding of HACCP, GMPs, organic handling procedures, allergen, glass and hard plastic controls and quality related policy.
