About the Part Time Van Driver Role at St Luke's Hospice

You will play a key role in enabling our hospice to deliver exceptional care, by transporting goods, donations, and equipment safely and efficiently. Main Duties and Responsibilities for the Van Driver



Safely drive a hospice vehicle to collect and deliver goods, including furniture, donations, medical supplies, and equipment across sites and in the community. Support loading and unloading of items, ensuring safe manual handling practices are followed at all times. Carry out daily vehicle checks to ensure roadworthiness, cleanliness, and report any defects or issues promptly. Provide excellent, compassionate service to donors, supporters, patients, and colleagues during collections and deliveries. Maintain accurate records of collections, deliveries, and mileage in line with hospice procedures. Work collaboratively with hospice shops, warehouses, and clinical teams to support logistical needs. Contribute to safe storage and organisation of items when at hospice premises. Comply with all relevant health and safety, infection control, road safety, and safeguarding policies and procedures. Promote and champion the values of St Luke's Hospice in all interactions.

Salary, Contract, and Working Hours for the Hospice Van Driver Role



Salary:

12.21 per hour

Contract:

Permanent, Part Time

Hours:

16-20 hours per week, including flexibility to cover occasional weekends or additional shifts as required

Location:

Based at the Basildon Warehouse with regular journeys across Basildon, Thurrock, and the surrounding area.

Essential Criteria - Van Driver Skills and Experience



Full, clean UK driving licence with experience driving vans (up to 3.5 tonnes). Ability to carry out safe manual handling and lifting duties. Good communication and interpersonal skills, able to interact respectfully with people from a range of backgrounds. Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and within a small supportive team. Proactive with a positive attitude and commitment to maintaining a safe environment for yourself and others. Basic literacy and numeracy to maintain simple records and complete delivery documentation. Understanding of, or willingness to learn, health and safety, infection control, and safeguarding policies.

Desirable Qualities and Experience for Hospice Van Drivers



Previous experience in a driving, logistics, warehouse, or delivery role, especially for a charity, hospice, or healthcare setting. Knowledge of the Basildon, Thurrock, and South Essex area. Experience in customer service or dealing with members of the public. Awareness of data protection, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
